Five friends, all around ninety years old, gather for their monthly Ladies' Lunch to discuss the puzzles and grievances of aging while sharing laughter. When one of them is unfortunately placed in a nursing home, the others conspire to free her. Lore Segal's titular short story, Ladies' Lunch, was first published in 2017 in The New Yorker, coinciding with Segal's ninetieth birthday. This was followed by additional installments. For this volume, five more stories were added, offering humorous and warm-hearted insights into friendship and mortality. They come from Segal's award-winning oeuvre, which highlights other moments from her long life—one of which tells the story of a child refugee from the Kindertransport, just as she herself was.
