Sally and Liss: two women who couldn't be more different. Sally, just before her high school graduation, wants to be left alone. She hates just about everything: offers, regulations, rules, adults. She hates questions the most, especially those about her appearance. Liss is a strong, reserved woman who seems to handle the work on the farm with ease. From their very first conversation, Sally realizes that Liss is different from other adults. No secretive scrutiny, no hasty judgments, no suspicious questions. Liss offers her a place to stay on the farm. One night turns into weeks. For Sally, the older woman is a puzzle. Who is she, who never speaks of herself, who lives alone in a house where the presence of others can still be strongly felt? As they mark trees, harvest potatoes, and Liss describes the old pear varieties in her orchard, whose taste Sally loves so much, the two women grow closer and gradually learn about the wounds that have been inflicted upon them.
