Paolo Venini's career began in 1921 when Venini and Cappellin opened a glass factory called Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Cappellin Venini on the island of Murano, the historic center of glass production in the Venetian lagoon. With Luigi Ceresa and Emilio Hochs as investors, they agreed to purchase the recently closed Murano glass factory of Andrea Rioda, hiring the glassblowers from the former company and retaining Rioda himself as the technical director.

However, their plans soon went awry when Rioda passed away before the production of Gemme began. Many of the leading glassblowers withdrew to establish a competing company under the name of Rioda's successor. Nevertheless, the company also started successfully and thrived, supported by the founder's distribution connections in Milan. The company also benefited from the commitment to introduce new modern design concepts. Venini restructured new blowers, first Soffiati Muranesi Venini and then Venini, and took on leading design positions in the Murano company.
