The Beni Ourain rug gets its name from the Berber tribe of the same name, which is native to the northeastern foothills of the Middle to High Atlas Mountains. The production of these rugs is traditionally the responsibility of the tribe's women and requires not only craftsmanship and skill but also, above all, endurance, as the process often takes several months. Although there are now extravagant, colorful variants of the Beni Ourain, the classic color palette is kept in natural tones, ranging from light beige to ivory white, with black, gray, or brown elements. A characteristic feature of a Beni Ourain rug is also the type of knotting and the geometric pattern—often in the form of diamonds or zigzag lines, although there are also asymmetrical variants available today.
