It has feathers with excellent thermal performance and insulation properties. The duck uses its down to line the nest, protecting the delicate brood from wind and cold. After the breeding season, the down is collected from the abandoned nest.

This down is particularly large, light, and soft. It has tiny branches that interlock like a fleece. This creates air chambers, which give it its high heat retention capacity.
