It has adapted well to the harsh climate and has plumage with excellent thermal performance and insulation properties. It lines its nest with down to protect the delicate chicks from wind and cold. After the breeding season, the down is collected from the abandoned nests. This down is particularly large, light, and soft. It has tiny little branches, allowing it to interlock like a fleece. This creates air chambers, which give it its high thermal retention capacity. Only half the amount of traditional goose down is needed for this wonderful filling.
