As the barrier opens outwards, there is no real thickness of mattress. The mattress should not be higher than the barrier, otherwise it is useless. The barrier is fixed to the bed slats.

The grille probably primarily protects the toddlers from falling out of bed while they sleep. If they stand up in bed during the night or pull themselves up on the bars, they can still fall out of the bed. With very small children, this problem can probably only be solved with a cot, as they can't get out even when standing up. We have had very good experiences with the Abus crib for our children (from about 2 years).
