Those who want to find it in nature must go high up. Arnica is a true mountain plant. It chooses open fields, the powerful light streams of the high-altitude sun, and becomes increasingly aromatic the higher it grows. It thrives in unfertilized mountain meadows and heather communities of the mountainous world, stretching its bright yellow flower heads toward the sky from June to August. The flowers sit atop sturdy stems that can grow up to 50 cm tall, emerging from a rosette of leaves. The entire plant is perennial and survives the harsh mountain winters by drawing its strength back into its rootstock.
