No, you cannot connect passive speakers directly.
The record player essentially already has an integrated preamplifier. This means that the output power of the turntable is amplified to a line level, so that you can then use the signal in a power amplifier (receiver/power amp) to drive the desired speakers.

If you connect active speakers, you can also omit the power amplifier.
