Graphene is a special form of carbon that was only discovered in 2004 &ndash, earning its discoverers the Nobel Prize. No wonder, after all, the properties of graphene really are revolutionary: harder than diamond, more elastic than rubber, 200 times more robust than steel and yet lighter than aluminium. All this is made possible by a special structure: in graphene, the carbon atoms form a honeycomb-shaped lattice that is exactly one atom thick. In it, each carbon atom is connected to exactly three other carbon atoms &ndash, and therefore these bonds are very, very strong.
