The fiber optic cable consists of three layers. The core of the optical medium has a diameter of 50 µm and is made of glass. This core transmits the information. It is surrounded by a cladding with a diameter of 125 µm, which reflects escaping light. The outer coating provides protection against mechanical damage and is made of plastic.
