Your Y2K Starter Pack: let there be glitter

From computer problem to beauty trend. When scrolling through apps such as TikTok and the like, one buzzword keeps popping up: Y2K. Continue reading to find out what the trend look is all about and how to style yourself accordingly.
No matter what social media platform I’m on, Y2K is everywhere. But what is behind the abbreviation? Y2K, or «Year 2 Kilo», originally referred to a computer problem of the late 1990s, the Millennium Bug. When computers were in their infancy, memory was expensive and PCs were programmed with a system that represented years in only two digits. So 1989 as 89 or 1999 as 99. Following this logic, the year 2000 would be represented as 00. It’s just a shame that the year 1900 already had the abbreviation 00 and there was a risk of confusion. The great Y2K dilemma.
Today, the expression stands for the fashion and beauty era of that time, to which we now look back nostalgically. Below you’ll find ways to reinterpret the beauty looks of the 2000s and transport them into 2021.
Look like a Bratz Doll

The Y2K trend is inspired by the heavily made up Bratz Dolls: glitter eyeshadow, metallic looks and artificial lashes – the look is zero subtle. Fortunately, when it comes to artificial eyelashes, we don’t have to rely on the technology of the early 2000s. Magnetic eyelashes simplify the otherwise annoying and sticky application of false eyelashes. Simply apply the magnetic liner, let dry, apply again and attach the lashes thanks to small magnets. All done, the Bratz Doll extravagant lash look is ready. Round off the eye make-up with either colourful eyeshadow or metallic gloss.

Hair waves and butterfly clips
The ’00s were playful and minimalism was still a foreign concept. Everything had to be colourful, glittery and flashy. Right down to the ends. Crimp your hair with a crimping iron for the perfect look and then pin the strands away with cute flower or butterfly hair clips. The rule: more clips equate more style! For those who don’t feel like treating their hair with heat, the Y2K vibe can also be achieved through space buns and glitter hair clips.
Nail stickers and nail art

Kitshy accessories and massive amounts of glitter were no problem in school days. With the office dress code, it’s harder to combine such flashy designs. A more inconspicuous solution are nail stickers. They’re easy to use and beautify any manicure, no matter how simple. Especially butterflies, hearts and other colourful motifs are suitable for a 2000 throwback.
Smell like an It girl
Who doesn’t remember the fashion icons of the time Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears wearing it: the pink velour jogging suit by Juicy Couture. The one with the iconic «Juicy» lettering on the butt. Today, most wouldn’t wear such a statement piece on the street, but thanks to Juicy Couture fragrances, you can still smell like a 2000s babe.
