Working from home is here to stay

COVID has shown us working from home can, well, work. Regardless of how the pandemic continues, it’s clear to Digitec Galaxus that home offices are here to stay. Our new work-from-home philosophy gets to the heart of the matter.

Since the beginning of March, many of Digitec Galaxus’ desk jobs are being done from home. It’s not always easy, it doesn’t fit every lifestyle and takes excellent coordination. Fortunately, we were able to count on the innovation and personal responsibility of our teams when we switched to working from home. Our teams have created remote solutions and flexible workflows that we wouldn’t have dared to dream of before.

It’s still uncertain how the pandemic will develop and what this will mean for the world of work. But one thing is clear to us: in terms of work organisation, we don’t want to go back to the old status quo. We want to keep developing. Based on our experience, we’ve decided to adopt a new work-from-home philosophy.

We don’t care where you work!

Not quite. Our new philosophy is as follows:

We want our employees to work in a place where they can concentrate. Where they can develop creative solutions with their team and partners. Where the infrastructure promotes healthy working. Where they can live up to their full potential. And we get it – sometimes, that place is the home office, sometimes our offices.

Here are the guiding principles of this philosophy:

  • In principle, we see working from home as an equivalent form of work. But we do still think it’s important to see each other in real life on a regular basis.
  • Provided the function and current tasks allow it, we guarantee our employees two days of working from home per week.
  • To ensure regular collaboration in person, we plan to have one team day per week.
  • Each team sets its own number of remote working days possible, ranging from two to four days. The team leader can adjust the team rules, if necessary.
  • Differing individual solutions require the agreement of the department head.
The Force is strong with you, no matter where you work.
The Force is strong with you, no matter where you work.

Caution: experiment in progress

We view our new work-from-home philosophy as an experiment. We believe it can be very successful. But of course, we can’t know this for sure yet. So we look forward to gathering experience and seeing what we learn. The last few months can already be seen as a test run for working from home at Digitec Galaxus. However, it took place under special conditions. Certain things were made easier by the COVID crisis. For example, there was an understanding for frolicking children, cats and partners. At the same time, other things were complicated by the last-minute transition, including technical challenges or lack of remote working experience. We want to see how it goes as we continue to build on flexible remote working options.

Come aboard!

Science fiction isn’t just my favourite genre, it’s also part of my job. Organisational development stands for thought experiments and planning how technology, science, humans and nature will interact in the future.
