Food, coffee culture, illegal go-kart races – six awesome student film projects
by Philipp Rüegg
At the Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK, the "Cast / Audiovisual Media" specialisation produces projects in a wide variety of forms and with a wide variety of content. Here are the trailers for this year's creative and unusual final projects by the young students.
For the third time, we are showing the final works of young artists from the ZHdK. More precisely, their trailers. The content and form of the works from the Cast / Audiovisual Media specialisation could not be more different. But see for yourself.
The explanatory play retold
How do you explain complex topics in an entertaining way on a YouTube channel? Davide Arizzoli tackles this question in his thesis for the YouTube channel "Klar Ton". The channel deals with musicological topics. To this end, he produced two explanatory pieces with a distinctive animated style made up of 90s graphics and found footage. The video "What's the point of music?" includes five theories on the evolutionary benefits of music. The second video "Bisch du musikalisch?" is dedicated to the question of what musicality means and how one assesses oneself in this regard. On his Tumbler blog, he provides insights into the development process of his visual, auditory and content-related narrative style.
A dispute between Christian and non-Christian Switzerland
Jan Dino Kellenberger has used social media to create an opportunity for people with access to the topic of Christianity to come together. Critical questions are raised and faith and world views are discussed in the comment functions. Jan Dino has produced video contributions based on thirteen interviews with Christians, agnostics and atheists. The interviewees ask critical questions about their world view. The whole thing is linked by the author's own level of commentary and his personal approach to the topic.
A cross-media project about the penal system and offences
The bachelor's project by Joanna-Yulia Wierig and Valentina Sproge not only provides insights into the prison system, but also into the people behind a violent crime. FREIHÄIT tells these stories in a cross-media format. The narrative strands of the web documentary about the REALTA prison and the biopic "FREIHÄIT" about the perpetrator S. are shown on Facebook and a blog about thoughts and the process of creating this work is shared. With small, animated explanatory pieces and surveys on Facebook, Valentina and Joanna create an additional level of communication for their joint thesis.
A web documentary on the topic of hot air balloons
The web documentary by Lea Senn shows that ballooning is not just about getting in and taking off, but also requires a lot of knowledge about technology and weather. After extensive preparatory work, passengers can expect an unrivalled experience. Lea Senn conveys the fascination of this form of transport from different perspectives and in several videos. In the 360° video, Lea lets the viewer share her fascination for hot air balloons directly.
A web documentation about Swiss winter customs
This diploma project documents Swiss winter customs in various regions of the country that take place between February and March. Each episode shows the preparations, the background and the celebration of a custom. Manuel Schmid spoke to people who are involved in the organisation of the respective festivities and who care deeply about them. Many customs at this time of year are linked by both the use of fire and the intention to "drive away the winter". Manuel gives the viewer a look behind the scenes of these events and shows the great effort and care required to ensure that these traditions can be revived every year.
A social media documentary about Eritrean music culture in the diaspora
The "Exile Guayla" project focuses on a culture that is unknown to most Europeans and invites people to discover and help shape it. With the help of the Eritrean Community and online users, Sidney Sutter and Valentin Mettler shed light on the background to the music, the dance, the language and the network of this vibrant musical culture that extends far into exile. The aim of the project is to create a contact surface between two very different cultures.
A 'digital native' takes over the social media channels of the Kunstmuseum St.Gallen
Social media is becoming increasingly important and at the same time more demanding for digital communication. Galleries and museums in particular have a lot of catching up to do in this area. In his thesis, Eloy Martinez takes on the channels and accounts of the Kunstmuseum St.Gallen and shows how digitalisation can be skilfully integrated into a museum's marketing and online presence. For three weeks, innovative and creative approaches from video to 360º images were trialled and implemented via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Where do you start? What is sustainable? How do you digitise an art museum? This collaboration with the Kunstmuseum St.Gallen thus becomes an exemplary case for the digitalisation of a museum.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
