The story
The life of world-famous neurosurgeon Dr Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) changes irrevocably when he can no longer use his hands after a serious car accident. Since conventional medicine cannot help him, he seeks healing in an unusual place - the mysterious Kamar-Taj. He soon realises that this is not just a healing centre, but a place where the battle against invisible dark forces that want to destroy our reality is fought. Equipped with newly acquired magical abilities, Dr Strange has to make a decision: Does he return to his old life as a respected wealthy doctor, or does he give it up to save the world as the most powerful magician of all time.
Film cast
Character actor Benedict Cumberbatch ("Star Trek Into Darkness") shines in the lead role of "Doctor Strange". The London-born actor has already achieved cult status with his title role in the BBC series "Sherlock" and was recently nominated for numerous film awards for his haunting performance in the biopic "The Imitation Game", including the Oscar® for Best Actor in a Leading Role. The supporting roles in this most fantastic of all Marvel adventures to date are also top-class. Playing alongside Cumberbatch are, among others Oscar®-nominated Chiwetel Ejiofor ("12 Years A Slave", "The Martian - Rescue Brand Watney"), audience favourite Rachel McAdams ("Sherlock Holmes", "A Most Wanted Man"), Golden Globe®-nominated Michael Stuhlbarg ("A Serious Man", "Steve Jobs") as well as exceptional actor Mads Mikkelsen ("Casino Royale", "Hannibal") and Oscar® winner Tilda Swinton ("Grand Budapest Hotel", "Only Lovers Left Alive").
Directing
Directed by Scott Derrickson ("Sinister", "The Exorcism of Emily Rose"), the film was shot in original locations around the world - including London, New York, Hong Kong and Kathmandu in Nepal. Behind the camera, director Scott Derrickson is supported by a Marvel-experienced creative team, including cinematographer Ben Davis ("Avengers: Age Of Ultron", "Guardians Of The Galaxy"), set designer Charles Wood ("Guardians Of The Galaxy", "Thor: The Dark Kingdom"), Oscar®-winning costume designer Alexandra Byrne ("Avengers: Age Of Ultron", "Guardians Of The Galaxy"), editor Wyatt Smith ("Thor - The Dark Kingdom", "Into The Woods") and visual effects supervisor Stephane Ceretti ("Guardians Of The Galaxy", "Thor - The Dark Kingdom"). The producer is once again mastermind Kevin Feige.
"Doctor Strange" is the second of nine films in Phase 3 of Marvel's Cinematic Universe, in which the studios will establish new heroes and continue the adventures of existing characters over the next three years.
