Why I started piercing my bars of soap

Liquid shower gel? Not my thing. I prefer a bar of soap. Bonus points if I can hang it up to save space. The brand Foamie does it just right. And I’m copying it!

One of the reasons I love the Foamie solid shower soap is that it can be hung up. You simply thread the supplied ribbon through the cut-out, tie together the ends to make a loop, and hang it up. Or you can tie it directly to your shower basket.

Whichever you choose, keeping your soap in the air has several advantages. For one, it can dry between uses instead of marinating in its own juices. It also saves shelf space along with the annoying residue the soap leaves behind. What’s more, you can loop the strap around your wrist to prevent the soap from slipping out of your hands if you’re the type who likes to use the bar directly on your skin. But what I like to do is lather up my hands on the soap while it hangs, acting as a kind of soap dispenser.

Long story short, the loop is an extremely useful feature that I want to upgrade all my run-of-the-mill soaps with. How hard can it be, right?

Let’s do it!

To make the hole in the soap, I start off with an engraving pen I had lying around at home. I can’t get all the way through the bar with it, so I switch to a narrow screwdriver.

Not ideal, but it gets the job done: my engraving pen.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy? Alas, not with my tools. The harder the soap, the more patience I need to dig through it without creating excessive splinters. A chestnut or hand drill is probably the more efficient choice. For softer soaps like the Honey I Washed the Kids from Lush, a pricker would probably be enough. In about 25 minutes, I was able to pierce and attach a loop to three bars of soap.

Waste of time? Some people will certainly think so. But I enjoy little DIY projects like this and am always pleased with the result. If you can relate, I recommend you do several in one go to make the mess and clean-up worth it. And if you want to go that extra mile for aesthetics, you can thread some beads onto the string.

The scrubbing trio.

Side note: don’t let the crumbs and soap dust created in the process go to waste. Simply collect them on a pad and use the next time you wash your hands.

Fair warning, a little mess is inevitable.

You might be wondering, «Natalie, what’s the point? Can’t I just use a soap bag instead?» Sure, but in my experience, the bag ends up looking musty after a short time, despite being air-permeable. And then there’s the hassle of fumbling around to get the soap out in the first place. I’ll pass.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
