The nursery: an oasis of well-being
by Tanja Lehmann
Is your bump growing and you're still looking for the right cot for your little one? Admittedly, it can be quite difficult to find the ideal solution for you and your baby. Every type of bed has its advantages, so it's important that you find out about all the options in advance. To help you make the right choice for your baby, I've put together a list of the different options.
Many parents prefer their baby to sleep in their parents' bed in the first few weeks, which is not uncontroversial. However, the fact that your baby is more likely to calm down through physical closeness is undisputed. So that your little one doesn't have to sleep directly in the parents' bed, there are various solutions so that they can still be close to you while you sleep.
You can attach a co-sleeper directly to the parents' bed. This means you can easily take it into bed at night for breastfeeding or use the lying surface of the co-sleeper as a nappy-changing area. When you no longer need the co-sleeper, you can convert it into a seat, for example.
You can rock a cradle forwards and sometimes also sideways. These regular movements and the body-size-appropriate basket have a very calming effect on your baby and provide a sense of security - just like in the womb.
You can place a bassinet anywhere in the home. This means you can always have your baby with you. In addition, your child can be rocked to sleep just like in a classic cradle. Some models are even equipped with wheels so that you can push your baby from one room to the next.
In many cases, you won't be able to use the above-mentioned variants beyond the age of six months, as the size and the small distance between the top edge of the mattress and the cot rail are often not sufficient for safe use. In this case, you can fall back on a commercially available baby cot.
A classic baby cot has a slatted frame and a lying surface of up to approx. 140x70cm. You can place the cot in the nursery, but of course also in the parents' bedroom, so that you can quickly look after your child. Baby cots can be used over a longer period of time, as most models can be converted into a youth bed. This means you can use it for up to eight years, provided your child is not already too big for it or wants a different bed in the meantime.
Friends, family, cats and good wine are my lifeblood.
