We make a colourful autumn mobile

Autumn is here! Yesterday I was splashing around in the swimming pool and today I'm running through the streets jumping in puddles. As a mum of two small children, it is particularly important to me that they learn to consciously perceive the seasons. That's why seasonal crafts are part of our compulsory programme. Today I'm going to show you how you can conjure up the colourful autumn mood on your wall.

The four seasons are as colourful and different as confetti. They are full of surprises and touch us humans in their own way. These major changes in nature follow a fixed cycle in our latitudes. It is particularly important to experience this rhythm of nature with children, as it gives them a sense of safety and security. In order to integrate the topic of the seasons into everyday life, I have discovered crafting as the simplest form for me. We make something for each season and create memories in the process. Would you like to do the same? Our mobile made from autumn leaves is a great project to get you started with seasonal crafts.

What do you need for the autumn mobile?

A slightly thicker branch. I think it's great when the branch has character: a little thin and a little thick, a little straight here and a little crooked there. This makes the mobile particularly interesting. To turn the branch into a mobile, you need the following things: sharp scissors, craft felt in different colours, a ball of wool, a pen to paint the felt, a wool needle and a thick string to hang the mobile. Optional: cones or other natural material and a hot glue gun.

And this is how it works

  1. Draw different leaf shapes in different sizes on a piece of white paper and cut them out
  1. Place the templates on the felt, trace the outlines with a pen and then cut them out. To make the mobile really colourful, use different shades of red and brown.
  1. Now cut different lengths of the wool, depending on how long you want the mobile to be. Using the wool needle and the wool thread, thread on the felt leaves by stitching through each felt leaf twice. When you have threaded the last leaf, knot the wool at the end. You can now attach this leaf thread to the thick branch.
  1. To make the mobile even more lifelike, you can incorporate natural materials. This time, we opted for small tree cones. I slipped the woollen thread between the scales of the cones and thus encircled the cone so that it remained attached to the woollen thread.
  1. Now all the leaf threads are attached to the branch and adjusted.
  2. Finally, attach a thick string to the branch and hang it on the wall!

Since the autumn mobile has been hanging on the wall, we stand in front of it from time to time and explore it together. My son (4) mainly asks me questions about the colourful leaves, while my little mouse explores the foliage with her hands and is delighted every time it moves. And yes, the mobile occasionally lands on the floor or a thread breaks. But the great thing about this simple craft is that it can be repaired very quickly.

Have you got the urge now? What colours are you going to use for your autumn mobile? In any case, you can already plan your next walk in the woods to look for a branch and cones. <p

I'm more of a thinker than a doer. Yet I'm still always active: crafting, sewing, writing to-do lists, daydreaming, counting clouds, digging into soil, comforting my two little ones and collapsing into bed after a long day. If it were up to me, each day would have a few extra hours... I wonder if that would be enough.
