This trend is also reflected in Galaxus' sales figures in Switzerland and Germany: in 2020, customers bought three times more carpets than in the previous year. And the current year will probably set another carpet record: From January to November 2021, 68% more carpets already went over the virtual shop counter than in the same period of the previous year.

Cozy and cozy it should be

In the lifestyle world, "cocooning" has probably been one of the most used terms since the outbreak of the corona pandemic. It describes the desire to withdraw from everyday social life into one's own home. So the sofa instead of the cinema and the kitchen table instead of the bar. But cocooning only works, of course, if you've made yourself comfortable at home. To achieve this, interior cracks rely on candles, XXL blankets, cushions and, more recently, carpets. During the lockdowns, there was a kind of government-imposed cocooning. This is also shown by the sales figures of the online department store Galaxus in Switzerland and Germany: in 2020, more than three times as many carpets ended up in the virtual shopping cart as in 2019. And also this year, the carpet continues its triumphal procession. From January to November 2021, Galaxus customers bought 68% more rugs than in the same months last year. If we compare only the winter months of January to March 2021 with the same period last year, we even see a growth of +298%.

Natural materials meet wanderlust

Cocooning comes from nature. Followers of this lifestyle take the caterpillars that spin themselves into a cocoon and then transform into a butterfly as their model. It is therefore not surprising that natural materials and muted colours play an important role in cocooning. Rugs made of cotton and jute are particularly popular.

Only at first glance may it come as a surprise that Persian carpets are on the rise again. The traditional carpets from the Middle East are emblematic of the wanderlust that has been plaguing many people for a good 20 months. Buyers of these carpets are bringing holiday memories of souqs and mint tea into their living rooms via online shops. No haggling at all 😊.

No one too small to be a carpet fan

Textile floor coverings are also making their way into children's rooms, because after all, kids don't like playing on cold floors either. This year, children's carpets had their peak season in the months of October and November: we sold 184% more children's carpets than in the same period in 2020.

More than for coziness, kids' rugs are for creativity and learning. The little ones should be introduced to the ABC, the earth or the animal world in a playful way.
