"Warcraft 3 Reforged": general overhaul of a cult classic

Blizzard brings the cult strategy game "Warcraft 3" out of obscurity. Although fans have never really forgotten it. It is still eagerly played today. It was a corresponding balancing act to satisfy both existing and new players with the reforged "Warcraft".

"Warcraft 3" not only represented the pinnacle of Blizzard's work at the time in 2002, it is still regarded as one of the best real-time strategy games ever. The multiplayer mode in particular has endured to this day. The most famous of these is the user-created map "Defence of the Ancients", or DotA for short. It served as a template for "League of Legends", "Dota 2" and other MOBAs. But the single-player campaign, which relied on significantly smaller armies with heroes compared to "Command and Conquer", also set new standards.

Blizzard's decision to remaster the game, like "Starcraft: Remastered", was therefore received with mixed feelings by fans. Some just wanted a new coat of paint and better matchmaking, while others called for far-reaching changes.

But Blizzard has apparently succeeded in this seemingly impossible task. At least if you believe Mike Smith. He is Head of Customer Service at Digitec Galaxus and a die-hard Blizzard fan. He didn't miss Blizzcon in California any more than he missed the beta for "Warcraft 3: Reforged".

"The beginning was really tough and I'm glad that they didn't release the game at the end of the year as announced. I now really like the new feel of the game," says Mike after around 35 hours.

Blizzard has completely overhauled the graphics, including UHD support and a new user interface. Even the cutscenes have been redone. There is now a female and a male version of many heroes. All changes are optional and can be deactivated at any time. Nevertheless, all owners of the original "Warcraft 3" will be able to play against owners of the "Reforged" version. All mods and maps are also compatible with the new edition.

For a better impression, watch our Let's Play. Mike and I will show you how the new features affect the campaign and multiplayer mode.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
