"Void Bastards": A space adventure with quirky humour and comic graphics to fall in love with

When a developer of "Bioshock" and "System Shock 2" releases a new sci-fi game with a deadly chic comic book look, my eyes widen like I've been smoking space weed. Raphi and I start our adventure at 1 pm.

You travel through space with a cargo hold full of expendable prisoners whose bodies serve as temporary combat suits. "Void Bastards" does not stand for political correctness, but rather for quirky humour. The game consists of three core elements. On the overview map, you plan your space jumps, which cost energy and food. With each jump, you either end up at merchants who sell you ammunition and components, in wormholes that randomly teleport you somewhere or in spaceships. The latter start the first-person shooter part of "Void Bastards".

People as uniforms

The spaceship missions essentially consist of collecting everything that flashes or glows green. Numerous bizarre monsters and robots stand in your way. If they manage to reduce your life points to zero, your journey starts all over again. You then slip into the body of the next criminal, who has random characteristics. You might catch a smoker who coughs at irregular intervals to attract the attention of enemies. On the other hand, tourists don't explode when you get too close to them. Tourists are small, fat alien creatures with hats that want to nibble on your orange prison uniform.

After each successful loot haul, you can craft new weapons, upgrades and equipment to make your next trip easier. These items are retained when you die. As you have a very limited inventory, you should take a close look at the upcoming dangers before you equip yourself.

You can tell from the game that Jonathan Chey, one of the developers, previously played a leading role in "Bioshock" and "System Shock 2". With "Void Bastards", the Blue Manchu studio has not only created a visual treat, but also delivers an entertaining space adventure with plenty of humour.

"Void Bastards" is available for PC and Xbox One.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
