Urban Riding - stay fit with these four types of bikes

created on 6.4.2018

Your city is on the move, you are on the move: with a city bike, a single speed, an e-bike or a folding bike. Sometimes you're a lightning bolt, other times you ride quietly and enjoy the ride. So-called 'urban riding': here is an overview of all city bikes and the advantages of the individual models.

City bike - the all-rounder

The quintessential city model is definitely the city bike, because it is easy to ride on asphalt and with up to 21 gears it allows you to comfortably cross the entire city, crossing hills effortlessly.

Single Speed - the hipster bike

There is not much to say. These bikes have no mudguards, no lights, no luggage rack and only have one gear. But that is their charm: they are essential. They are also called "fixie", or 'fixed gear', when they have no freewheel. In this case, pedalling is integral with the movement of the rear wheel. It is therefore not possible to pedal empty backwards, nor is it possible to stop pedalling, unless you want to slow down abruptly. Freewheel speed bikes are a little more practical and less dangerous. Most often they have a flip flop hub on the rear wheel, so they can be used both freewheel and fixed-gear.

E-bikes - for getting around town comfortably and quickly

Pedelecs, also called 'pedelecs' or slow e-bikes, reach speeds of 25 kilometres per hour and are increasingly used in cities. Fast electric bicycles, on the other hand, reach a speed of 45 kilometres per hour and must have a licence plate and vignette. They are massive bikes and generally boast a comfortable seat. In most cases they are equipped with central motors to distribute the weight on the bike. Sporty electric bikes, called e-trekking, can also be used in the city.

Folding bikes - for getting on and off public transport

. This variant allows you to be mobile and flexible. In a matter of seconds you can fold up your bike and load it onto the train, then deposit it under your desk when you get to the office.
