Cotton wool pads just clog your waste bin and cost you money. At first glance, microfibre cloths appear to be the more environmentally friendly alternative. But there's something better.
At first, I thought that reusable microfibre cloths were an option, but they're not free of (micro)plastics. My search for an environmentally friendly make-up removal method continued.
Shortly after the publication of the above article I found it: the low-waste alternative to my cotton pads. For almost ten months now, I've been foregoing ordinary cotton wool pads, instead using «Pandoo» brand washable ones made of bamboo fibres. We don't carry them as of now, but you can find similar ones from Bambusliebe.
Unlike the microfibre cloth, which can only be used with water, I recommend using a make-up remover for bamboo or cotton pads, as the fibres are not nearly as fine. This way you can be sure that you remove all traces of make-up from your skin and no smudges are left behind. The pads come with a wash bag, which I only use for storage myself. I have the feeling that the bamboo discs in my washing machine get cleaner when I put them in one by one instead of bundled in the little bag. However, I recommend you rinse the pads by hand immediately after use, so that the coarsest particles are removed and don't rub off on your clothes later. The pads shrink slightly from wash to wash and the soft surface becomes rougher over time. But since I don't have sensitive skin, this doesn't bother me. On the contrary: I like the slight peeling effect.
