The seven best ice cream makers to test

Summer rhymes with ice cream, coincidence? Ice cream makers make it easy to make delicious ice cream yourself. "K-Tipp" has tested twelve of the best-selling machines with cold storage bowls and compressors.
Ice cream is only better when it's homemade. So ice cream makers are all the rage these days. And with good reason, they can make ice cream in just 30 to 60 minutes.
But one question remains: which machine makes the creamiest, tastiest ice cream? The Applitest laboratory in Nuremberg (Germany) has put this to the test for you. A total of twelve machines from different brands took part in the test: six models with a compressor that produces cold (based on the same principle as a fridge) and six models with a cold accumulator bowl. .
Test procedure
The testers assessed the appliances according to the following points:
- Ice-making (70%): two types of ice cream, ice cream and sorbet, were made on all the appliances, always following the same two recipes.
- Handling (30%): assembly, programming, filling and emptying, functionalities, user manual, noise level and cleaning.
Rating scale:
5.5 to 6 = very good, 4.8 to 5.4 = good, 4.0 to 4.7 = fair, 2.5 to 3.9 = insufficient,
less than 2.5 = poor
Results
The appliances with compressors tend to do better. Their advantages: the ice cream is generally smoother and they allow you to make ice cream more quickly, even without planning to. Machines with cold accumulators, on the other hand, require more preparation time. Bear in mind that the bowl needs to be cooled for several hours before you can make ice cream. This explains the price difference between the two types of machine.
Three compressor ice-cream makers were rated 'very good', with the others receiving a 'good' rating. The most expensive machine, the "Gelateria Pro" from Solis, received the highest score. As for appliances with a cooling bowl, only the "De Longhi IC 8500" delivered satisfactory results. The other ice-cream makers received a "fair" rating. Cleaning was laborious for all the appliances. The lids and mixers are not dishwasher-safe for some and are difficult to wash by hand.

When it comes to office supplies, I believe in form and function. From pens, scissors, paper notes to glittery glue and funky folders. That’s what I’m about at work. When I’m not busy checking out the latest desk accessories, I enjoy jetting off to remote corners of the world, lifting weights or taking an evening walk.
