The ball - and everything you can do with it

The ball is a round, spherical object that can be made of plastic, rubber or leather. Such a simple object that forms the basis for a variety of sports around the world. We'll introduce you to a few of these sports and look into their history.
Football
There are different opinions about the origins of the game of football. The first traces lead to China, where a game similar to football was played as early as the 3rd century BC. At that time, the ball was sewn together from pieces of leather and stuffed with feathers and animal hair. However, this sport soon fell into oblivion again. The emergence of the modern game of football as we know it today began in 1848, when students at Cambridge University drew up the first football rules to distinguish it from rugby football, which was widespread at the time. Soon after, the world's first football club, Sheffield FC, was founded. Although England is considered the motherland of football, there were already related games in France and Italy.

Tennis
The sport of tennis began in the Middle Ages and was particularly popular with the nobility and bourgeoisie. It was first known as a game of backstroke, then as "jeu de paume" (a game played with the palm of the hand). This sport was initially played outdoors. It was not until the 1870s that modern lawn tennis was invented in Great Britain. The first and therefore oldest tournament was the Davis Cup, which was held for the first time in 1900. The Swiss won this tournament for the first time in 2014. Today, tennis is one of the most important sports in the world.
Table tennis
The origins of table tennis lie in England. Towards the end of the 19th century, a British major had the idea of developing a mini version of tennis. In the early days, rubber balls or cork balls were used to play. It was only later that the celluloid ball came into play, which a gentleman named James Gibb is said to have discovered while travelling in the USA in 1891. Back then, dining tables were used as table tennis tables, a string served as a net and books or frying pans were used as bats. Table tennis has developed enormously since its beginnings and is now an Olympic discipline.

Beach volleyball
Beach volleyball was first played in Santa Monica, Southern California, in the 1920s. At that time, the rules of the indoor game were adopted and played six against six. It was not until the 1930s that the current form of the game, two against two, emerged. However, the real breakthrough only came in the sixties. It was then that a beach volleyball lifestyle developed that is still typical of the sport today: beach, sun, sea and athletic players.

Unihockey
It is still not clear who is actually responsible for the development of the sport of floorball. However, the first preliminary forms are known and can be traced back to the 1950s. At that time, this sport was mainly played in the USA. It was played with plastic sticks and plastic discs with a very low weight. In the 70s, the sport finally spread throughout Europe. Nowadays, Finland, Sweden and Switzerland dominate the international scene.
