Table high, chair low – account of a sufferer

What is there to test on a camping chair, I hear you ask. That’s how I felt before my summer holidays. In spite of this, I took up the challenge.

«Even your bog-standard camping chair needs to be tested. After all, you want to be sitting comfortably while you’re testing all those other products, right?!». These words uttered by our Galaxus camping gear purchaser persuaded me to take the «AMA» camping chair by Campo Libre on my three-week trip around Sweden.

So as I was packing up the motorhome, I took out the camping chairs provided by the rental company and swapped them for the Campo Libre model. This would allow me to use the chair everywhere and help me form a well-founded opinion on it. Whatever opinions there are to form on a no-frills camping chair that doesn’t feature anything fancy like a cup holder, sun protection, footrest or massage function.

One thing I noticed right away that’s a huge plus with the AMA: unfolding it and closing it up again is really fast and easy. In fact, all you need to do is grab the chair by the backrest with one hand and the armrest with the other and push or pull.

Another thing I really like about the chair? It’s super comfortable to sit in.

But there’s a catch. The natural sitting position you assume in the chair is on the deckchair side. It’s seat height is quite low and incompatible with the camping table I packed.

NO THANKS: For three weeks, I felt I was too small for this world when I sat down for a meal. (Reenactment).

If your chin’s hitting the tabletop with every bite, you know the table’s too high or your chair’s too low. Annoyingly, Campo Libre also has a camping table – LARA – but my in-house camping equipment supplier didn’t give me it for testing (thanks for nothing). The table would’ve been height adjustable, which would’ve made mealtimes so much easier for me. Oh well.

While the chair didn’t fit into my dining setup, I enjoyed it all the more for lounging in a pretty place, camera or book in hand, watching the sun set or enjoying the tranquility.

YES, PLEASE: For three weeks, I’d sit in the evening sun as often as possible. Like here at the Göta Canal, reading, taking pictures or just letting my mind wander.

Verdict

The AMA is a simple, comfortable camping chair. It’s available in three different colours. In addition to the khaki version I tried out, you can also go for black or taupe. Although it’s not up there with the really pricey models, it’s also low-budget. If I wanted it to work for future camping vacations, I’d need to invest in the matching table and two additional chairs to seat my family. With all due respect for the sustainable production and high-quality materials Campo Libre uses, its price tag would pain me somewhat.
