Space buns tutorial: two buns for your festival weekend

Braided hairstyles have long been part of the open-air programme. But how exactly do you conjure up a 'plaited bun' as a complete beginner? In the first part of our three-part tutorial series, braid pro Carla Opetnik shows you how to create double space buns with Dutch braid elements with a little practice.

The open-air season is open and everyone is happy - everyone except me. So while the festivals are opening their doors, I'm closing up shop. Perhaps my aversion stems from the fact that, at 5'5", I never get to see any of the action on stage. Or maybe it's because my height means there's absolutely no chance of getting any fresh air at a concert. Not even if it's outdoors. Because if your head is on the same level as several hundred sweaty armpits, then it simply can't be good for your nose.

And yet every festival also has something good, because ...

Coming up with the braid

... paradoxically, I'm on fire for the hair styles, make-up and dress code that prevail at festivals. Especially for elaborate braided hairstyles, because they're very much back in fashion at the moment. You know, the ones that make your fingers knot just by looking at them. That's why Stephanie and I got in touch with the talented Carla from Zopfchopf. She's a braiding pro and will show us how to get the perfect festival hairstyle in no time at all in three different tutorials. In the first part of our three-part series, she conjures up double space buns with Dutch braid elements and open curls on my head - and I quickly realise during the shoot: as a beginner, I can forget about the "quick and easy" approach right away.

Carla only needed 10 minutes to style her own hair in the morning. Threads and earrings, which she wove in, add that certain something.

Every move is perfect: Carla pulls the braid apart a little before tying it to add volume to the hairstyle.

One chop, one braid - or several

Carla is one of the two founders of the start-up "Zopfchopf", whose mission is to dress up city girls with all kinds of braided hairstyles - and, I'd like to point out, at a pretty affordable price. The blue-haired powerlifter learnt her craft from her mother. Her dexterity impresses not only Stephanie and me, but also Dominik Bärlocher, who quickly agrees to act as sound technician for the shoot. However, less than five minutes later, he is already sitting in the executive chair himself and having his hair plaited. Only for research purposes, of course ...

The final touch: Carla is reluctant to use a curling iron - but she makes an exception for my sake.

By the way: If you're still struggling with braiding (despite our great video), why not keep an eye out for Carla at the next festival? Maybe you'll spot her or someone else from the Zopfchopf crew at a stand. They'll be happy to help you!

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
