Sorry, you're too slow and way too loud

People are lazy. They want to automate everything. But some machines just can’t keep up with us. For example, this card shuffler.

I don’t mind shuffling playing cards by hand. Quite the opposite: I actually rather enjoy it. So why should I get a machine to do it for me? Out of curiosity!

But I’m not going to spend a fortune just because I’m curious, so I get a cheap one. First impression: all plastic. Second impression: no batteries included. I knew it. Luckily, I have some lying around. I put them in the shuffler and off we go. There’s no «On» button, just a tongue that says «press down to operate».

This shuffler has one simple function: place two piles of cards of about the same size in the top of the machine, The thing going and one wheel on each side will turn to move the cards to the middle. As a result, the two stacks are mixed into each other. The technique is similar to a riffle shuffle.

Yes, it shuffles the cards, but I'm faster by hand. It takes several rounds until the cards are properly shuffled. And after every round, you need to get all cards out of the machine and put them back on the top. In addition, this card shuffling machine is extremely loud. I measured 93.5 decibels. This is equivalent to a jackhammer from a distance of ten metres.

My verdict

Don’t do it. It's not worth buying this card shuffler. You might use it once or twice, but after that, it will stay in a corner and collect dust – you’re faster by hand and your ears will thank you. This card shuffler could be useful for people with a physical impairment, but I’d recommend getting a more expensive version that shufflers the cards without having to take them out and put them back in all the time. Anything else would be wasted time and money.
