Small bathroom - immerse yourself and relax despite the lack of space

In our fast-moving times, the bathroom is becoming more of an oasis of retreat where you can relax, unwind and find peace and quiet. It is therefore important to design a bathroom that is not only functional, but where you enjoy spending time and feel comfortable. Small bathrooms in particular often feel cramped and uncomfortable. What can you do?

If you have more space, it is a good idea to visually separate individual areas. In small bathrooms, it is better to emphasise the unity of the room. A small bathroom opens up more invitingly when the walls and floor are designed with the same materials and colours. This creates a unity that makes a small bathroom appear more spacious.

Large tiles are suitable for a small bathroom. This is because the smaller number of joints creates a calmer surface. If you want to avoid joints altogether, you should plaster the entire bathroom walls with water-repellent plaster. This creates a homogeneous, calm surface without tiles.

Colours have a significant influence on the effect of the room. If you want to make the small bathroom look big, it is best to use light colours or colours from the same colour family for tiles and bathroom furnishings. For example, combinations of beige and brown, white and cream or various shades of grey are suitable. The fewer contrasts and harsh transitions the colour scheme contains, the calmer and larger the bathroom will appear. In a low-contrast environment, the eye recognises fewer outlines and the room appears more spacious as a result.

Flush-to-floor open showers are not only easier to get into, they are also a strong design element. In small bathrooms in particular, barrier-free shower cubicles have a calmer effect and give the room more spaciousness because a continuous floor creates clear lines. A fully tiled shower area looks larger than a bathroom with a built-in bath. It is therefore advisable to use a small bathroom as a shower room only.

Free floor areas make rooms appear more spacious. It is therefore worth fighting for every centimetre of free space in small bathrooms. Wall-mounted bathroom fittings are ideal to prevent objects from standing around. This applies not only to soap dispensers, hairdryer holders and toothbrush tubs, but also to the washbasin unit, shelves and other wall-mounted units. Bathroom rugs should also be used sparingly. Furniture placed across the room should be avoided at all costs. In small or narrow bathrooms, they act as visual barriers. Mirrors are also a good trick for visually enlarging a small bathroom, as they create the illusion of additional space.

Niches should also be utilised. Existing niches can be easily converted into storage areas for towels and utensils with a few shelves, increasing the storage space without the need for additional furniture. The narrow section of wall behind the door or between the sanitaryware is a great place for additional hooks. Baskets or hanging fixtures with several small pockets can be attached to them. This creates new space for small items.

Light makes a small bathroom look more spacious. Rearranging the ceiling lighting or installing several spotlights instead of a single, large light can help. Structural changes such as new skylights or enlarging windows are also ideal for creating more light.

High-quality materials and unique pieces such as black or copper-coloured fittings, handcrafted shelves in reclaimed wood or specially framed mirrors, all small eye-catchers, attract the viewer's attention and distract from the small rooms.

A mix of natural materials such as natural stone, wood or fabrics make a small bathroom sensual and cosy. This transforms the purely functional space into a small relaxation area where people enjoy spending time. Larch wood is ideal for the bathroom as it is naturally water-repellent. An additional protective layer of wood oil is suitable for preventing water stains as far as possible.

A final tip: Always harmonise all elements in terms of material, colour and surface. Harmoniously designed rooms have a calming effect on us and make us enjoy spending time in small rooms too.

Whatever I do, I always do it with a lot of heart and passion. Passion accompanies me like a red thread through life. This is how I love to spend time with my family as well as to design rooms and objects. I like real materials where you can see, smell and feel how they have been worked by hand into an object. They tell stories and are the beautiful companions for life. I like to be inspired by nature, the things of everyday life and my children. I am also inspired by the sensual experiences in traditional handicraft businesses. Based on common values and virtues, I founded the interior design company "MOOMII" in 2016 with my colleague Mona Dolpp.
