Salewa Sella Responsive jacket recycles your infrared radiation

A shell jacket that absorbs your body's infrared radiation and gradually releases it back into your muscle tissue? That's what Salewa promises with the new Sella Responsive. A promise that the South Tyroleans keep.
Higthech from Bolzano: From Salewa comes a shell jacket that is made for high mountain tours and ski mountaineering and weighs just under 500 grams. How does that work?
Responsive technology
Salewa utilises the heat radiation of the human body. The inside of the jacket is coated with a thermoreactive print. This layer absorbs the body's far infrared radiation (FIR) and gradually releases it back into the muscle tissue. According to Salewa, this should also work if you are wearing several other layers under the Responsive material. The result: better blood circulation, higher cell performance and better oxygen supply. This means you perform better, recover faster and stay warmer for longer. The Responsive technology was scientifically tested at the Politecnico di Torino. The print is permanent and does not wear off even when washing the completely PFC-free jacket.

Made for the mountains
The jacket has a special athletic fit cut for sufficient freedom of movement when climbing so that the hem doesn't ride up. The storm hood with pre-shaped peak can be adjusted at the back with one hand. The hood is ergonomically cut and fits over the helmet. All seams are taped and the sleeves are adjustable with Velcro fasteners. This means that neither rainwater nor snow can get inside. The long zips up to the sleeve ends allow air in if necessary. The jacket has two front pockets with a waterproof zip, a large chest pocket that is not covered by your climbing harness or rucksack strap and two large inner pockets made from a stretch material. Other details include the elasticated hem, which you can adjust with one hand even when wearing gloves, and the stretch snow skirt with side snap fastener.

The same Responsive technology used in the shell jacket is also used by Salewa in certain models of its ski trousers.
From Muottas Muragl to Pontresina
The end of October in the Engadin. The sun is shining in the sky, the forests are golden. I hike from Muottas Muragl to Pontresina. The Sella Responsive has become my constant companion. No matter whether it's sunny, windy or rainy: The jacket is always with me. At 2500 metres, the temperature climbs to just above zero degrees and I make my way down into the valley. After a good two hours, I arrive in Pontresina. Here the thermometer shows over ten degrees. My jacket has warmed me up at the top, I open the zip at the bottom and cool down.

I'm about to head back to the hotel in Samedan when I discover the Salewa store in Pontresina. Just pop in quickly: Hey, you've got a really cool product in your range. Unfortunately it's the company holidays. Too bad. Well, just this way: Hey, you lovely people at Salewa, you've launched a cool product on the market.
My impression
What can I say? I really like the Sella Responsive. It keeps me warm and dry. It protects me from wind and weather. And it also cuts a fine figure in bright sunshine. However, it does come at a price. And at just under 500 francs, it's very steep.
