Available soon: Performance upgrade and new riding mode for Bosch Performance Line CX
by Patrick Bardelli
Bosch eBike Systems is launching an upgrade of the "Performance Line CX" mountain bike drive unit from mid-July. I have already been able to test the beta version. And I haven't been able to get the smile off my face since.
It feels like Christmas, even though it's only the middle of June. The blue sky is cloudless, I'm standing in the forest next to a single trail littered with roots and stones, beaming with sunshine. Ilona Jeckelmann from Bosch Communications is sitting next to me on her e-mountainbike and asks: «So, what do you think so far?»
By «es» she means the upgrade to the Performance Line CX. The manufacturer is giving its customers a free upgrade to the Drive Unit and a new riding mode. From mid-July, Bosch eBike Systems will make this comprehensive over-the-air update available via the eBike Flow app.
In advance, Ilona invited me to test the beta version with the new features. And so today we are on the Blue Trail. At the end of the tour, we'll have covered around 1200 metres in altitude over a good 42 kilometres and the grin on my face will be even wider.
The upgrade will make it possible to increase the maximum torque from the current 85 to 100 Newton metres, boost the motor power from 600 to 750 watts and push the support factor from 340 to a maximum of 400 per cent. I want to find out what this means in concrete terms.
Bosch calls its motor Drive Unit. The sensors built into it measure, among other things, how much force I exert on the pedals, the cadence, acceleration and how fast the bike is moving.
This Bosch technology is known for its sensitive and direct control. The riding experience should be as natural as possible. Depending on the assistance level, the unit provides different amounts of power. And up to a maximum of 25 km/h.
Further information on the different Bosch riding modes can be found here.
The eMTB mode is a speciality of the Bosch Drive Unit. In this mode, the motor dynamically adapts the support via the sensors to the combination of my riding style and the respective surface. In addition, the so-called Extended Boost in this mode offers the option of rolling over obstacles such as roots with a kick with a targeted push on the pedal.
With the new eMTB+ mode, which will also be available with the upgrade from mid-July, Bosch says it is closing the gap to Race mode. eMTB+ combines the precise control of one mode with the full power of the other.
The following table gives you an overview of which models get which upgrades:
The new mode with this performance is, in a word, awesome. And the main reason for my good mood during this test drive. The combination of dynamic assistance, which increases and decreases exponentially depending on the route profile and requirements, makes driving a real pleasure.
I've probably ridden this route a few dozen times on different bikes. Mainly with e-MTBs, recently also with the Biobike. These included models from Bixs, Orbea, Scott and Focus, with support from Bosch and Shimano motors. And I've never had so much fun on the trail as I do today!
I've always had a similar routine after this tour: wash the bike and put it in the corner, then put my feet up for the rest of the day. That's it. Today I feel like I could ride the same tour again. I think that says it all about the benefits of this upgrade. Customers of the current Performance Line CX can therefore rejoice. And that's my verdict on the Bosch Performance upgrade: it almost doesn't get any better than this.
