Pearls before swine

The new generation of iron-on beads is called Aquabeads. Instead of a hot iron, all you need is a few splashes of water. Top or flop? Two kids put them to the test.

In the past, I was always immensely proud of my artistic creations. My iron-on bead creations made me feel like a young Picasso. I "stuck" the picture together and my mum put the finishing touches to the artwork with a smoothing iron. Teamwork. The beads from Aquabeads work on the same principle, but the ironing part is omitted. Instead, the beads stick together by drizzling water over them. The heat-free version of the system from my childhood.

Because I know how my colleague Simon Balissat reacts to little beads and concentration exercises, I would like to test the colourful set with him. We do without the pre-printed picture templates. Instead, video editor Armin Tobler sets us tasks. A pile of plastic bags and a mess of beads later, the set is unpacked, the unwieldy bead gun loaded and the leaky water container filled. Find out which of us is blessed with more talent in the video above.

The beads are non-toxic according to the manufacturer, but they smell anything but trustworthy. Because we didn't want to wait an hour for the pearl creations to dry, we tried semi-successfully to shorten the waiting time with my hairdryer. The whole thing ended - regardless of the hairdryer - in a sticky disaster. So you're better off sticking to the tried and tested concept with the flat iron. At least you can hang up the pictures thanks to the holes in the beads - as long as they don't look like Simon's. 😁

This video was created before the days of social distancing.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
