Overwintering cacti correctly

They have a reputation for being undemanding contemporaries. But in reality, our cactus friends are just little divas in spiky coats with a few basic things to consider. Especially when it comes to overwintering.

The most important facts about our spiky friends in a nutshell

Succulents & cacti

Cacti belong to the group of succulents and are the best-known representatives of this group. Succulent plants are basically sap-rich plants that adapt to special climatic and soil conditions. Although they belong to the same group, a conscious distinction is made between cacti and succulents.

Home location

Cacti need a well-lit place. Then they don't mind normal living temperatures. However, not all of us have a conservatory and it tends to be too dark anyway. It is therefore advisable to keep the cacti in a room where the temperature is moderate.

Cellar location

If your prickly friends cannot spend the winter indoors, they need to be put into hibernation. A dark location, such as a cellar or stairwell, is suitable for this. The most important thing is the temperature: it should not be below 4°C or above 12°C. At these temperatures, the plants' metabolism is reduced to a minimum. That's why they don't need as much light as usual.

Watering

In addition to the temperature, (not) watering is probably the most important factor. Plants that overwinter or are kept indoors at normal temperatures should only be watered moderately during the winter months. I have not done badly with a schedule of every 6 weeks. Otherwise the small specimens tend to dry out.
Classic cacti that spend the winter in a cool place should not be watered. In principle, cacti can overwinter in a completely dry substrate. In wet soil, the plants may even rot from below. Rule of thumb: no water for our favourites from November to March.

Fertilising & repotting

Fertilising should ideally be stopped in August. You should wait until spring is back before repotting.

I’m always looking out for new trends, true to the motto: «Decorate in a style today everyone will want tomorrow». As I have to take it down a notch at work, I express myself in my own home. It’s where you’ll find curiosities, collectables from faraway places and handmade things side by side. Interior design should always be personal and authentic – just like you are.
