It's time to fit the winter tyres again. But you don't have to go to the garage. Find tips here on how to change your tyres yourself.

Season-appropriate tyres ensure good handling in different weather conditions and guarantee safe braking at all times. Temperatures are the decisive factor when it comes to fitting winter tyres: from 7 degrees Celsius, summer tyres lose grip - as soon as the first frost is on the horizon, winter tyres should be fitted to the vehicle. Winter tyres have unbeatable advantages on slippery and muddy roads: Their sipe structure ensures correct grip on slippery surfaces.

So now, get on your car and fit your winter tyres!

How to remove the summer tyres

Secure the vehicle

First, apply the handbrake and put the car in gear - to prevent the car from rolling away while you are fitting the tyres, it is better to secure it twice.

Loosen the bolts

Loosen the wheel bolts on the locked tyre before jacking up the car to prevent accidents. This is very easy with a wheel spanner.

Jacking up the vehicle

Slide the jack under the jacking point on your car and then jack it up with the jack. Caution: Be sure to pull the jacking bar out of the jack afterwards and put it aside so that the jack does not suddenly come loose during disassembly.

Screw out the screws

Use the wheel spanner again to unscrew the bolts from the wheel. Put them to one side for fitting the winter tyre

Remove the wheel

Now lift the car with the jack (jacking rod reinserted) so that the wheel is hanging above the ground and you have enough space to move the wheel. This will allow you to lift it easily from the suspension strut.

Mark the wheel

It is worth marking the position of the wheel on the tyre (e.g. VL for front left) so that you know where it was fitted when you reassemble the car after the winter. Chalk is ideal for marking.

Store correctly for longer usability

Always store your tyres clean (rinse with water) and either lying flat or hanging. A dark and dry place is ideal for storage - this prevents the rubber from ageing as quickly

How to fit winter tyres

Check the tyre tread

Already used winter tyres should be checked for their residual tread before fitting. The TCS guideline value for the tread depth of winter tyres is 4 mm. Important: Always measure the depth of the tyre tread at the main grooves in the centre of the tyre.

Fitting the winter tyre

Put the appropriate wheel (according to the marking from spring) on the car while it is still raised. Insert the wheel bolts set aside and tighten them lightly. It is best to do this crosswise.

Lower the vehicle slightly

Open the valve on the jack so that the car lowers slightly and the wheel is blocked from the ground again.

Tighten the wheel bolts
The torque required for the bolts differs from vehicle to vehicle and must be adhered to. Refer to the vehicle's owner's manual for more information. Then set the required torque on the torque spanner before tightening the bolts crosswise. Caution: Only tighten the wheel bolts until you hear the torque spanner click into place.

To all torque wrenches

Repeat the procedure for the remaining wheels until all tyres have been replaced

Important: After you have covered the first 20 to 50 kilometres with the newly fitted tyres, you should urgently tighten all wheel nuts with a torque spanner. It is quite possible for a nut to come loose again after the tyres have been fitted.

Bravo for that! You've now fitted your tyres for the season and are well prepared for winter roads. We wish you a good and safe journey!
