Now available: the ‘Skylight’ skylight simulator from Philips
The new ‘Skylight’ ceiling light creates the illusion of a skylight in your room. A special version of the lamp is even said to boost your vitamin D production.
A lack of daylight affects not only your mood but also your health. Many people miss out on sunlight, particularly during the darker months of the year. Philips offers the «Skylight» – a light fitting that simulates a skylight in your ceiling, letting bright «daylight» into your room.
To make the illusion perfect, Philips has to employ a few tricks. According to the manufacturer, the «Blue Sky panel» simulates the sky in varying shades of blue without casting a blue glow over your room. The light colour is said to match real daylight.
Just like the pane in a skylight, the panel is set within a frame. Two sides of the frame glow as if illuminated by the sun, whilst two remain «in shadow». This is intended to enhance the illusion and simulate the angle of incidence of sunlight. Philips has even thought of a «window reflection»: the frame appears to be reflected at the edge of the panel.
«Skylight» in the standard version
«Skylight» is available in two sizes: Medium (650 × 450 × 88 millimetres) with 3,800 lumens of brightness and Large (900 × 600 × 88 millimetres) with 5,300 lumens.
«Skylight» with «VitaUp»
If you are prone to vitamin D deficiency, this may be due to a lack of sunlight. The UVB radiation contained in sunlight stimulates your body to produce this vitamin.
«Skylight» with «VitaUp» – this module is designed to give your body a helping hand: according to the product description, the lamp emits the amount of UVB radiation required for sufficient vitamin D production over a period of eight hours each day. That, at least, is what Philips promises. However, according to the manufacturer, the lamp cannot fully replace sunlight.
It is well known that too much UVB light is dangerous, as it can cause sunburn. According to the manufacturer, «Skylight» offers TÜV-tested, «controlled, low-intensity UVB».
The models in this «Skylight» range are just as bright and slightly larger than the standard version. The medium-sized lamp measures 680 × 450 × 88 millimetres, whilst the large one measures 932 × 600 × 88 millimetres.
Suitable for all indoor spaces
In ‘ «’ Auto Day Rhythm mode», the «Skylight» replicates the lighting atmosphere of the current time of day. Other modes allow you to adapt the lamp to your activities and select a warmer or cooler light temperature, for example.
You control «Skylight» via a wall-mounted control panel supplied with the lamp. There is no app: the lamp remains offline. With an IP44 protection rating, the light is also suitable for damp rooms such as the bathroom. No special tools are required to install the lamp.
My colleague Lorenz has already featured «Skylight» in a news article. A review will follow.
Update: Unfortunately, in the first version of the text, the standard and «VitaUp» products were swapped. This was due to an internal mix-up. The lumen specification in the text is also slightly too low. I have corrected this and apologise for the confusion.
