A world without Netflix? It's hard to imagine anymore! To make sure you never miss a hit series or film release again, here's the ultimate guide for June. Don't have Netflix? No problem: we have DVDs and BluRays.

Netflix and chill: a common invitation to a date. But let's leave aside what we women think men's intentions are with such an invitation. We automatically associate Netflix with the term chill, as the film and series portal simply screams cosiness and relaxing hours. Because if we lie on the sofa, in a deckchair or even on our bed and switch to netflix.com, we can forget all our everyday stresses and immerse ourselves in a completely different world.

We are spoilt for choice and have so much choice that normal television, which is now infested with trash TV, can no longer keep up. So what are you waiting for? I can literally smell the popcorn and feel your anticipation for a good film. Pull down the shutters, switch off the lights - and let's go. Well, even though the weather is finally great, we're going to treat ourselves to a few hours off. After all, a break never hurt anyone. And even if you suddenly have a guilty conscience, the sun and summer are already waiting for you, because now it's time to Netflix and chill!

But if you don't want to plunge into the world of streaming and still want to keep up with the latest series and films on the portal, you can do that too. Because we film collectors and TV lovers know: A DVD or BluRay on the shelf is something nice after all. Because that way we haven't just stared at the screen, but have actively engaged with the material and ensured that we can watch the film again forever. Because Netflix takes its films and series offline from time to time.

New films

Victoria

  • When: 1 June 2017
  • What's it about: A film that couldn't be more action-packed. Spanish girl Victoria (Laia Costa) meets Berlin boys Sonne (Frederick Lau), Boxer (Franz Rogowski), Blinker (Burak Yigit) and Fuss (Max Mauff) during a night of partying. They join forces and end the night at the Späti round the corner and on the rooftops of Berlin.

As morning approaches and Victoria has to go to work at the café, Sonne accompanies her. The two get along splendidly, but their attempts at flirting are interrupted by the arrival of the others in the group.

Boxer owes an old prison mate a debt and what is advertised as a completely harmless job turns out to be a robbery at a private bank. Victoria has to drive the getaway vehicle and is drawn into the whole spectacle...

The film was shot by German director Sebastian Schipper with just a single camera shot. This extraordinary masterpiece lasts 140 minutes and is the winner of three different versions - none of which were edited. "Victoria" dates from 2015, was shot during one night in Berlin and is considered the best German film export since "Run Lola Run". So don't miss it under any circumstances!

The Beloved Sisters

  • When: 1 June 2017
  • What it's about: Caroline von Beulwitz (Hannah Herzsprung) and Charlotte von Lengefeld (Henriette Confurius) are sisters and inseparable. They spend every spare minute together and share everything - really everything. Even when they both fall in love with the same man, their sisterly love knows no bounds. Together they start an affair with the writer Friedrich Schiller and from then on lead a ménage à trois. Schiller takes a liking to both Caroline and Charlotte, as they both win him over in their own unique way. Charlotte, the balanced and domesticated one, and Caroline, the licentious and clever one. They are similar, and yet both are completely different.

While Caroline is still unhappily married and hopes that Schiller will give her the love she never received from her husband, Charlotte has long wanted to find true love and believes she has found it in Schiller. But can it last?

Tune in and find out more about this crazy love triangle. German director Dominik Graf delivers a work that is still set in the days of inkwell and pen, secretary and paper, sealing wax and candles, and creates a quite extraordinary film with "The Beloved Sisters". After an eight-year break, Graf is back and convinces with something quite unusual for him.

22 Jump Street

  • When: 4 June 2017
  • Why: The hilarious story about the two wannabe police officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) continues: after successfully solving their case at high school and blowing up the drug network, the two friends are now allowed to continue investigating at college. "22 Jump Street" is dedicated to the same topic as its cult predecessor - only somehow better and even funnier.

As undercover police officers, they mingle with the students and begin to take a liking to the laid-back life on campus. Jenko devotes himself to sport and makes friends in the university football team. Schmidt, on the other hand, devotes himself to high art circles and once again the friendship between the two jokers threatens to break up. Somewhere between the many parties and new acquaintances, the two lose each other, but will they get together and successfully solve the case? Find out on Netflix!

Früchte des Zorns

German, John Steinbeck, 1985

  • When: 8 June 2017
  • What it's about: Based on the 1939 novel of the same name by US writer and Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck, "Grapes of Wrath" remains an absolute black-and-white classic that you absolutely cannot miss! And the sad and socially critical story of the Joad farming family from Oklahoma is finally available on Netflix.

The novel is one of the best 100 English-language novels written between 1923 and 2005 for a reason, as it shows a slightly different side of the USA during the Great Depression. When Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) returns from prison, he learns from neighbours that his family has had to leave the farm and is on its way to California, where well-paid work without exploitation is supposedly waiting for them.

Shocked, Tom learns that practically all the farming families in the neighbourhood have been evicted by the big landowners and have all headed west in the hope of a better life. When Tom finally catches up with them, he sadly learns that the arduous journey has already claimed several victims and that anything but the freedom they dreamed of awaits them at the end of their journey.

Pride and Prejudice

  • When: 15 June 2017
  • What it's about: England, late 18th and early 19th century: Jane Austen's "Pride & Prejudice" tells the story of the lives of Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) and her four sisters. Her mother's (Brenda Blethyn) greatest wish is to get all her daughters married as quickly as possible, as the Bennet family estate cannot be passed on to female heirs. When the rich bachelor Mr Bingley (Simon Woods) moves in next door, Mrs Bennet sees her big chance. At a ball, Mr Bingley promptly falls in love with Jane (Rosamund Pike) and the Bennet household is overjoyed.

While everything is going well with Jane, Elizabeth secretly has her eye on the arrogant Mr Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen). The two lovers have to fight their way through numerous misunderstandings and mistakes until a happy coincidence awaits them.

As my absolute favourite novel by Jane Austen, I have watched the 2005 film adaptation by Joe Wright more than once. The literary film adaptation doesn't quite come close to the book, but the director manages to create a worthy homage.

New series

Scream (season 2)

  • When: 31 May 2017
  • What it's all about: The hype surrounding the "Scream" series continues: the horror series has been shown on the US channel MTV since 2015. Cult director Wes Craven is also involved and, together with Harvey and Bob Weinstein as producers, is bringing the mask of yesteryear back to life. "Scream" is absolutely not for the faint-hearted, as the small town of Lakewood is haunted by a series of murders and terrible memories are awakened.

Emma Duval (Willa Fitzgerald) and her friends Will (Connor Weil), Brooke (Carlson Young), Jake (Tom Maden) and Riley (Brianne Tju) take centre stage. It all begins with the murder of high school student Nina Patterson (Bella Thorne), who is found dead in her parents' house. It all comes flooding back immediately: the bad memories of the mask! From the end of May, we won't have to wait any longer and the second season of "Scream" will finally go online on Netflix. For all those who want to get in the mood and haven't had enough of the first season, we recommend the original trilogy by Wes Craven.

Orange Is the New Black (season 5)

  • When: 17 June
  • What it's about: Produced by Netflix and available on the streaming portal in the USA since July 2013, the hit series has also been available in Germany since 2014. This year, the hype is entering its fifth round. The story based on Piper Kerman's memoir "Orange Is the New Black: My Year In a Women's Prison" is about everyday life in a women's prison.

Manager Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) actually leads an orderly and law-abiding life in New York. But suddenly her criminal past catches up with her: Ten years ago, Piper had transported a suitcase full of drug money for her former college sweetheart Alex (Laura Prepon). Alex accuses Piper in her own trial and so the two former lovers end up in prison together - and cause quite a row. In prison, Piper and her former girlfriend face a rough everyday life full of crime and terribly uncomfortable fellow inmates. If you're already eagerly awaiting the latest stories from the women's prison in Litchfield, the series will continue on Netflix from 17 June.

So: on your marks, get set, binge!

Elementary (season 3)

  • When: 27 June 2017
  • What it's about: A modern version of Sherlock Holmes: Englishman Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) is hired to work for Scotland Yard, but falls out of favour. In order to escape the deep drug hole, he is sent to a rehab clinic in New York. After his release from the clinic, he works for the New York Police Department as a counsellor and is assigned Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) as his watchdog. The former surgeon acts as a "sober buddy" as she has lost her licence to practise medicine after making a fatal mistake.

Initially annoyed by her, the eccentric Englishman begins to benefit from Watson's medical knowledge over time and together they become an unbeatable team - just like Holmes and Watson, only in a very idiosyncratic way. The third season starts on Netflix on 27 June, so you should definitely zap through the first two seasons to make sure you're prepared.

Grimm (season 4)

  • When: 30 June 2017
  • What it's about: Once upon a time...The fantasy and mystery series is based on the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. Stephen Carpenter, David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf create a series of supernatural creatures that are hunted by Nick Burckhardt (David Giuntoli).

Detective Burckhardt works for the Portland homicide squad when his entire world view is suddenly turned upside down. He learns from his dying aunt (Kate Burton) that a so-called Grimm lies dormant within him, and that he has the ability to recognise terrible creatures hiding in his fellow human beings. From then on, it is his mission in life to hunt monsters and, together with Hank Griffin (Russell Hornsby) and the good-natured werewolf Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell), he declares war on the terrifying mythical creatures.

Gypsy (season 1)

  • When: 30 June 2017 (planned)
  • What's it about: And finally, a drum roll please for the absolute series highlight in June: at the end of the month, we can expect an absolute must-see psychological thriller starring Naomi Watts. Not much is known yet, but it is clear that the story will revolve around therapist Jean Holloway (Naomi Watts). At the centre of the ten episodes is a tangle of relationships: Holloway is supposed to simply take care of her patients' problems, but she crosses the thin line between patient and doctor and begins to have intimate relationships with the people her patients talk about.

We wish you a good start to June, which is packed with series and film hits. We'll be back at the end of June: with the best prospects for a hot July. <p

I spend my everyday life with writing, eating, sports and sleeping - and in between a lot of humour. I love the summer, ice cream, chocolate, sunsets and walking barefoot. Traveling, exploring new worlds and experiencing adventures. And nothing beats a good pizza with good friends to a good movie.
