Nespresso principle for fragrances: a practical test of the smart room fragrance from Revoltab

The "Stand - Plug & Play Smart Diffuser" is like a Nespresso machine for room fragrances. With a capsule system, I can change and customise the fragrances just as easily as I make my coffee. I can conveniently control the intensity and schedule via my smartphone.

Until now, I thought I'd seen it all when it came to room fragrances: scented candles, incense bundles, scent stones, gel fragrance dispensers and electric diffusers. But for almost a year now, a Swiss start-up has been bringing a breath of fresh air to the market with smart and stylish fragrance solutions. Revoltab offers elegant aroma diffusers such as "Stand" and "Hide", which combine modern design with clever technology. Everything can be controlled via the app - from how strong the fragrance should be to when it should be released. So every room in the home, hotel, beauty salon or office can smell good.

I love the idea of being able to choose the fragrance at home just as easily as I choose my coffee. I will find out in a short practical test whether I like the control via the app. Revoltab provided me with a sample of the "Stand" for this purpose: with my desired flavour tab "Nude, Tonka & Fig".

First impression

Minimalist packaging like that of "Stand" - a simple black box, no frills or unnecessary packaging material - is convincing across the board. Especially in a world full of overloaded designs, it remains pleasantly memorable.

Install and use

The QR code on the enclosed card leads to the instructions for use. Although I like to use products intuitively, it's worth taking a look at the instructions as the order is crucial: first connect the diffuser to the power supply, then download the Revoltab app to your smartphone. Using the app's location function, I can scan the QR code of "Stand" in the capsule area to connect the aroma diffuser to the WLAN. The capsule should therefore only be used after connecting. An animation in the app shows how the cap is removed, unlocked and inserted. The entire process takes about one minute.

Intelligent schedules

The app impresses with its intuitive operation and clear overview. With just a few clicks, you can adjust the fragrance intensity and create several fragrance profiles for the day. Discreet in the morning, more intense at midday, switched off in the evening as the fragrance still lingers. Fine noses can detect the fig aroma in the hallway, even though the diffuser is in my living room. However, the device is only audible in the same room - it gets a little louder when the fragrance is diffused intensively.

And the best thing? Unlike with candles or incense sticks, I don't have to worry about it all the time. Reliable freshness whenever I want it. I'm even spared the stress of refilling. The flavour dispenser lets me know when it's time to replace the tab. This can be ejected at the touch of an app button.

Scent & design

The fragrance "Nude, Tonka & Fig" by Revoltab smells pleasantly warm and inviting. The tonka bean adds a sweet, slightly spicy note and the fig provides a fresh, fruity touch. For me, this is a great blend that is relaxing and refreshing - but that is of course a matter of taste. To ensure there is something for everyone, there are currently a total of eight different fragrances, of which samples are also available to try out.

"Stand" looks decorative, which I like. With its geometric shape, it is simple and elegant and the legs with the golden spheres give it that certain something. I'm also happy with my choice of colour. The nude shade brings some colour into the room. If that doesn't appeal, there is also silver, green and white to choose from.

Cost-benefit ratio and subscription model

As with Nespresso, you can take out a subscription with Revoltab, where the new scented capsules are delivered directly to your home. This allows you to save money with discounts and customise the delivery to your liking. For example, by changing the fragrances or specifying how often you want them delivered. The price depends on whether you take out a plan or not. However, it is in the upper range, similar to a smart fragrance diffuser from Rituals (approx. CHF 125). Although this is justified by the functions and quality, it is more likely to appeal to people who are willing to spend more on a room fragrance. For my part, I'm sticking to natural methods such as palo santo wood for the time being.

Environmentally friendly

The intelligent diffuser requires electricity, albeit minimal, which increases energy consumption compared to fragrance stones or sticks. In addition, the plastic capsules are a problem compared to biodegradable essential oils. However, Revoltab claims to recycle the capsules and make new ones from them. With every repeat order, you will receive a return label with which you can return the empty capsules free of charge.

In a nutshell

Quality has its price: stylish and customised fragrance solution

The Revoltab "Stand" diffuser is a really cool item if you like simple operation. With the capsule system, you can change the fragrances just as easily as your coffee capsules. Everything can be controlled super conveniently via the app - from the fragrance strength to the time period. The flavour diffuser also looks great, with its chic design matching many interior styles. And with eight different fragrances to choose from, there's something for everyone. The available subscription system for the tabs is practical because you no longer have to worry about replenishment.

On the other hand, you are a little reliant on the app, which may be less appealing to non-technical users. less like. The running costs for the capsules are slightly higher compared to classic room fragrances.
