"Mordhau": Chaotic medieval carnage with a surprising amount of depth

A new contender for the throne of the multiplayer medieval brawler swings its club. "Mordhau" is bloody and chaotic, but also offers a surprising amount of depth for advanced duellists. Simon and I are more of the pitchfork-wielding bumpkins, but that doesn't stop us from having fun. We'll be streaming live at 1pm.

"For Honor", "Chivalry", "War of the Roses": Medieval multiplayer brawlers are ruled by a manageable squad. Now, with "Mordhau", a new brawler has joined them. Developed by the Slovenian indie studio Triternion, "Mordhau" is similar to "Chivalry". Different classes with halberds and crossbows as well as chaotic battles with up to 64 players, in which you can barely distinguish your bloodied comrades from the enemy. "Mordhau" also has a few tricks of its own up its sleeve.

At first glance, "Mordhau" is quite simple to play. There are three game modes: Frontline, Battle Royale and Horde Mode. In Frontline, two teams of 32 players each fight for various points on the map. In Battle Royale, you start without weapons and try to be the last survivor as the playing field gets smaller and smaller. Finally, in Horde Mode, you fight in a team of six against growing hordes of AI opponents.

You can also fight on horseback.

Create your own class

Frontline is the most popular mode. You have the choice between several pre-made classes: For example, the knight who wields a mighty two-handed sword, the huntsman who fights from afar with a bow or the scoundrel who sets traps and throws firebombs.

You can also create your own characters. Right down to the smallest detail. Not only can you determine the appearance, you can also choose the clothing, including colours and patterns, how many and which weapons your warrior carries and even which skills he has. There are 16 points to distribute. For one point, you get a perk that allows you to deal less damage to team members and take less damage yourself. In "Mordhau", Friendly Fire is active, which regularly leads to gaping wounds on all sides with the huge weapons. The weapons you give your Recker also cost points. A dagger only costs one point, whereas a longbow costs 11. The same applies to armour - heavy armour costs more and makes you slower. "Mordhau" offers so much flexibility.

Fights are not as messy as they look

The centrepiece is clearly the battle system. The tutorial lasts 15 minutes and is compulsory. But even after that, you're far from finished. You use the mouse to determine the direction in which you attack. Use the Q button to parry and counter-attack at the right moment in the same direction as the attack. You can fake attacks and switch from a swing to a thrust and so on. There is a huge amount to learn. In 1vs1 duels, beginners have no chance against advanced players. Even if you have a broadsword and armour and your opponent is naked and armed with a stone (!). However, "Mordhau" is designed so that even beginners can have fun. If you fight in groups, your chances of success increase. Or you can set traps, use the catapult or ride over enemies on horseback.

In our Let's Play we show you how many ways you can die in "Mordhau".

"Mordhau" is available for PC and was provided to us by Triternion.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
