Laura's Likes: Calvin Klein is the stuff minimalist dreams are made of
Our flaming nostalgia for the minimalist 90s aesthetic reached its peak with the FX series "Love Story" about Carolyn Bessette and John F. Kennedy Jr. One label in particular bears the greatest responsibility for the wildfire in our hearts: Calvin Klein.
The 1990s were the decade of supermodels (Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell), Hollywood stars (Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow) and royals (Lady Diana). What did they all have in common? Their often copied and rarely equalled flair for perfectly minimalist outfits. If we can even talk about outfits at all. Because they often consisted solely of a simple slip dress and even simpler sandals.
One woman who had perfected this «minimal effort, maximum effect» aesthetic down to the smallest detail was PR consultant Carolyn Bessette, who fell in love with John F. Kennedy Jr. in the early 90s and became world famous. The FX mini-series «Love Story», released in February, pays homage to their relationship - and inevitably to Bessette's still iconic style and her work for the New York brand Calvin Klein.
Calvin Klein is the label of the moment
In view of our never-ending 90s love affair and the rekindled fascination with the outrageously beautiful (and tragically ill-fated) Bessette-Kennedy couple, the following fact from the latest trend report by fashion search engine Lyst is hardly surprising: after the series finale, searches for Calvin Klein rose by a whopping 43 per cent.
The brand, which was founded back in 1968 and was most recently famous for its legendary advertising campaigns, is finally being recognised for more than just its fragrances andthan its perfumes and unashamedly flaunted underpants.
The absolute favourite product of my colleague Stephanie Vinzens and me, the «90s Straight Jeans» is unfortunately no longer available. Instead, I've picked out seven other pieces from our range that exude at least as much Bessette 90s charisma - and could also be out of stock soon. Be quick!
