Be it protein for building muscle, minerals to boost the metabolism, or vitamins to strengthen the immune system, more and more people are relying on dietary supplements to bolster their fitness and health. Sales of vitamin pills, effervescent tablets and protein shakes have been rising for years. 2024 is set to be a record year for Galaxus.

Dietary supplementation is becoming more and more widespread – think vitamin pills for breakfast, protein shakes after a workout or anti-hangover powder after a night out.

Galaxus’s sales figures confirm this growth. In 2023, the online retailer recorded double and triple-digit percentage growth in sales of sports nutrition, sports drinks, vitamins and other nutritional supplements. And growth is proving just as strong this year.

Vitamin supplements are very popular in Switzerland. In the «vitamins and nutritional supplements» category, all roads seemingly lead to Burgerstein; three of the five best-selling products stem from the Swiss family firm. Featured in the top 5 is also Kaex’s powder meant for improved regeneration after sports or drinking too much alcohol.

As you’d expect, when it comes to sports drinks, isotonic drinks from Isostar and Powerade are at the top.

Electrolyte tablets are all the rage when it comes to sports nutrition, being the most popular product in this category this year. Protein supplements are also in high demand. Fruit- and coffee-flavoured protein powders are currently leading in the Galaxus range.

But who buys all these supplements? People aged 35 to 44 strike most frequently, followed by 25- to 34-year-olds.

Men are more than twice as likely to buy sports drinks and sports nutrition. On the other hand, when it comes to vitamins and supplements, the gender ratio is nearly equal.

Do you treat yourself to a protein shake after hitting the gym? Do you swear by energy gels for endurance training? Or do you think nutritional supplements are a bunch of woo-woo? Let us know in the comments.
