Linguistic virtuosity: where is the butter zone?

1,200 euros for a ski jacket? For that price, it must be able to do a hell of a lot. We wanted to find out for sure and asked around.
Every year, the best products are honoured at the world's largest sports trade fair, ISPO in Munich. In the "Snowsports" category, the 2019 prize went to Mammut. For their "SOTA HS Hooded Jacket". Maxi Weber welcomes us to the exclusive Mammut pavilion for an interview (see video above).
The new ski jacket from Mammut will cost a whopping €1,200 and will be available from winter 2019/20. For this proud price, this jacket must be able to do a hell of a lot. "An enormous amount of sweat and blood has gone into this jacket," says Maxi Weber right at the start of our conversation. Which reads like this in Mammut marketing-speak:
The Sota HS Hooded Jacket is extremely elasticated thanks to the knitted fabric with Mammut PHASEknit technology, while its PFC-free DryTechnology 3-layer material makes the jacket waterproof and breathable. The innovative PHASEknit concept allows the seamless integration of abrasion-resistant 3D structures in high-wear areas. In addition, open structures in the material increase breathability in strategic areas such as under the arms, in the side areas or at the back, where they ensure a pleasant body climate even when wearing a rucksack.
The innovation lies in the PHASEknit process, which allows the seamless integration of different material properties and their strategic placement in the product. This means that the products can be made with fewer seams and tapes and are more durable, breathable and comfortable. The use of laminated knit also ensures a unique design. In addition, the PHASEknit process ensures that the products leave a significantly smaller ecological footprint. Thanks to the Georganic T-Shape pattern, the fit and freedom of movement are further optimised.
The jacket also features splash-proof and smooth-running YKK Vislon® 2-way zips on the front and underarm vents, a detachable, elasticated snow skirt, pre-shaped sleeves with Velcro fastening and elasticated hand gaiters as well as a helmet-compatible, adjustable hood. For even better protection against penetrating snow, the jacket can be attached to the trousers using press studs. Insulation inserts are also glued to cold-sensitive areas to protect against the cold.
Or, to put it more simply, this jacket can do everything and will certainly make a killer espresso if you want it to. 😋
Apropos marketing word acrobatics: sports colleague Michael Restin has his own thoughts on the subject:
Everything from Mammut at Galaxus is available here and the second-best espresso is still made by me.
From radio journalist to product tester and storyteller, jogger to gravel bike novice and fitness enthusiast with barbells and dumbbells. I'm excited to see where the journey'll take me next.
