Is this pants trend wide off the mark?

Do you like classic and casual cuts? If so, this fashion trend is sure to make you happy. Instead of being form-fitting, many pants are currently wide-cut. This gives them an edge.

The weather is going crazy. Instead of light, airy dresses, I’m wearing pants and long-sleeved tops – in August! But I refuse to squeeze into jeans or leather pants. It’s too warm for that. Besides, I wear them enough during the winter months. I need a fashionable alternative; something that’s both as comfortable as my beloved sweatpants and as chic as leather pants. Lucky for me, influencers have already found the solution. My Instagram feed is flooded with posts of wide, dynamic-looking pants.

Flared pants are the ideal compromise between rugged denim and breezy summer dresses, because they swing along as I walk and still create shade for my legs. During the summer months, pants made of light and flowing fabrics such as Lyocell, silk or viscose are ideal. Linen is also a good choice. Not only is it comfortable to wear, but also cools your skin in hot weather.

How-to

I’ll be the first to admit that the change from tight to wide pants can take some getting used to. I speak from experience. The majority of my wardrobe (aside from my joggers) consists of tight-fitting pants and oversized tops. To hop on this trend, I have to turn the contents of my wardrobe upside down; wide pants look best with figure-hugging tops. Why is that? They balance out the flared pant leg, creating a cohesive look that doesn’t look baggy. Plain t-shirts and tank tops, like the one worn by influencer Felicia, are best suited. I’m still not a fan of tight tops. So, I wear a shirt over my tank top. I either leave it open or tie a knot in the front.

While I prefer a shorter leg, digital creator Jessica goes for extra-long pants. It’s a simple matter of taste. Do you want to try out her style? Make sure you pair the pants with flat footwear like flip flops, dad sandals or ballerinas. If you’re more into wedges or sandals, your shoes (or at least the toes) should peek out from under your pant leg. Otherwise, you’ll look as if you’re floating above the ground. A bit jarring. If you’re undecided, go for a cropped pant – like me – that ends at ankle level.

Whichever you end up going for, I can tell you one thing: ever since I switched to wide-leg pants, I no longer find myself standing aimlessly in front of my closet in the morning. Take that, crazy weather!
