The butterfly puzzle from Aniwood offers you a dream of blue and orange. It impresses with its high-quality workmanship, unique puzzle pieces and a beautiful result.

Too old school, too much patience required, too boring pictures: I haven't touched a jigsaw puzzle in decades. But when a colleague showed me the colourful selection of puzzles from Aniwood, I immediately grabbed one. It had to be a psychedelic butterfly.

I loved the picture of the item with the colourful butterfly on a black background and was curious to see if the butterfly really was that colourful. Small spoiler: Yes, it does!

No two puzzle pieces are the same

The 200 puzzle pieces come in a sturdy plywood box. The removable, black lid is adorned with the complete butterfly in its original size. It is located in a recess in the wood. The lid can also be used as a puzzle template and the puzzle pieces can simply be placed in the recess.

The box also contains a full-size template image, a butterfly-shaped adhesive film, a small bag for the puzzle pieces, a wide elastic band and six small, transparent plastic adhesive dots. Apart from the film, I didn't need any of this, in fact I don't even know what the elastic is supposed to be good for. There are also two plywood feet that you can use to decoratively place the lid with (or without) the puzzle.

The individual puzzle pieces are made of multi-layered plywood with a thickness of 5 millimetres. They are real eye-catchers, and not just because of their bright colours. According to the manufacturer Aniwood, no shape should appear twice: Despite the repeating segments such as squiggles, waves, hearts and other recesses and outgrowths, all the pieces are different, even in size.

In addition to these highly imaginative shapes, there are also 19 unique animal figures that also serve as puzzle pieces. These include an owl, a raven, a squirrel, a bear and a wolf. The animal figures are very easy to identify thanks to the branded guide lines.

Puzzled together in an afternoon

On a cosy Sunday afternoon, I took on the puzzle. I decided to actually put the pieces together in the mould provided in the lid. This gives them more grip and they don't slip so easily. However, you can also use the enclosed picture as a template or - as a professional - do without a template altogether.

My husband's desire to do puzzles was also awakened when he looked over my shoulder as I made my first attempts. We actually did the puzzle together and enjoyed looking for matching pieces and completing the butterfly. Although I usually only let myself be entertained by the screen, I had a lot of fun doing the puzzle. Finally closing a long-open gap with the right piece provides an unexpected sense of achievement.

After a few hours, we had completed the puzzle. I think that's okay for beginners, you can see results quickly. The puzzle can be secured with the enclosed adhesive film: I simply turned it over and stuck the film to the back of the butterfly. It's a bit fiddly and certainly works better with two people, but ultimately the pieces should just stick together. It doesn't have to be pretty. The front of the puzzle takes care of the look.

I've learnt that jigsaw puzzles can be really relaxing.

Theoretically, you can now stick the butterfly to the wall with a suitable adhesive or decorate other surfaces with it. I decided to put the butterfly back on the lid and place it in the living room with the feet. Incidentally, the puzzle pieces protrude slightly over the cut-out in the lid so that the butterfly stands out a little from the background.

In the beginning, I was annoyed by the writing on the lid, which detracts from the decorative effect, but in the end the butterfly really catches the eye. I really like its rich colours and playful shapes and am thinking of bringing more puzzle animals into the house and opening an Aniwood zoo. Even my husband, who doesn't usually notice decorative objects, expressed his approval several times.
