The 3 best things we found at IFA (and work statistics)
by Dominik Bärlocher
The International Consumer Electronics Fair in Berlin has begun. Editor Dominik and video producer Stephanie are on site. They report on the trade fair, which heralds tech trends and shows devices to the public for the first time.
Swiss soil under our feet. We don't really know what to make of it
.
The night shift signs off for the last time.
A few lines about my faithful companion during the IFA, the Porsche Book One.
Our last day at the IFA. Your last chance to ask us questions
One last time: the night shift begins
Finally, we find some healthy food at the fair. We already had it yesterday, but we were really sick. Today it's a treat.
Manoeuvre critique. What's still missing from our coverage? Shooting and route planning, packing one last time. Somehow the melancholy begins to resonate.
The night shift signs off. We still had some B-roll footage of Stephanie playing music on Peperoni.
Stephanie is really good at this, by the way. In case. Good night! See you tomorrow!
Panasonic has unveiled an extremely interesting prototype of a so-called social robot. It is designed to support parents in raising their children. As exciting and technologically great as the little robot is, it is also creepy.
Stephanie Tresch couldn't be stopped yesterday and had to test the Panasonic GH5. She explains why in an anecdote about her career as a camerawoman.
During the days at the IFA, we saw a lot of curious things. We thought we'd take another look at the stands with the strangest things.
We take a look at the IFA Global Markets exhibition, colloquially known at IFA as "the China Hall".
We have tested the new Mavic Pro Platinum Edition. We also take a quick look at how DJI and co. are working with the Chinese military.
The night shift begins. By the way: Before we get the official subtitles for the Libratone video in Zurich, switch on the automatically generated ones. The tip comes from Fabian Schneider. Thank you!
And finally this: We have found an inconspicuous pair of headphones that pack a punch. The Pioneer Rayz are the second headphones in what we hope will be a new generation of wired headphones.
The night shift hereby signs off. See you tomorrow!
Stephanie made me take a closer look at pink speakers. Until I heard the sound and got to know the technology and the update philosophy of the manufacturer Libratone, it was a bit too daft for me. But the little speakers are really good.
We pitted headphones against each other. Product Manager Fabio Endrich was on hand to help us. We want to know: Which is better - the JBL Free or the BeoPlay E8 Truly Wireless Headphones?
The reinforcements from Switzerland arrive
Reinforcement from home. Graphic designer Mariana Hurtado reports that she is testing the Lenovo Yoga Book as we report back to Zurich to make a video of it. After a night shift in Switzerland, she has finished the review.
The first thing we see at the fair is a dance with lightsaber drumsticks. Rather strange
They dance because somehow the baking time at an oven demo has to be bridged in an entertaining way.
Yesterday we were exposed to the noise. Music everywhere. We've never had such an exhausting day at the trade fair, even though we've already had to deal with less sleep and more content.
Speaking of sleep: we're signing off. See you tomorrow!
In the comments, TobiG3032 asked what a gimbal actually is and how he would control one. We explain the device.
It's getting loud at the IFA
We had kumpir for dinner. We think it should definitely be available in Switzerland too. On the way to the kumpir, we passed this sign for a food truck that serves as a catering truck for a TV production company.
The night shift begins
In Hall 1.2, where all the audio equipment is on display, a fierce arms race is underway. Everyone wants to be louder than everyone else. We feel a little sorry for the men and women at the stands. But: the sound is great!
Dominik and Stephanie explore keyboards and other gaming hardware
Stephanie tested the Sony WF-1000x for Dimitri and NY_99 today.
The reason we do so much Sony: The main entrance to the show is often backed up with long queues. There is a back entrance to the Sony stand, which is more or less open to the public. We quite like to use it, because no queues are better than queues.
But that was it for today. We produced 13 videos and seven texts in two days. We think we've earned a night off. See you tomorrow!
We may have invented a new term. Malin from PowerVision likes our term "U-Drone" or "U-Drone". What's more, we now know that underwater drones are funnier than flying ones.
Dominik tested a new keyboard with new switch technology overnight. His verdict: hardware hui, software pfui.
Do you know this place?
From "Hanna":
From "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II":
In real life, this is a subway near Messe Berlin. We stumbled across it by chance today. Cool, isn't it?
Today, it was just one thing after another. One appointment followed the next. With empty batteries and full memory cards, we set to work on the editorial team.
Towards the end of the day, it did get a bit tiring. So we take a seat on a gaming sofa.
We're signing off for today. Good night!
Sharp apparently also makes smartphones. The strange devices don't reveal any information about the specs on the printed labels or on the software side, but they do have a nice feature in the camera.
The trade fair opens for the press. We are there and looking for the highlights.
The LapBook Air from manufacturer Chuwi comes straight from Shenzhen, China. Extremely thin, extremely light, extremely Apple. But with Windows and slightly fewer specs. The manufacturer also has models such as the SurBook on sale.
You didn't think we'd just leave out the LG V30 like that, did you?
Just very briefly. RAVPower has unveiled a rather nice little wireless charger with Quick Charge technology.
User NY_99 asked in the comments what the Sony MDR-1000x are like. Stephanie tested them for you today.
We thought we'd show you what manufacturers mean by "We have a stand at the IFA". We've been to concert halls with 1000 people that are smaller than a major manufacturer's stand in Berlin.
We are confused. It's 18:50 and the night shift is starting. Before dusk. This has never happened before. Dominik has also got hold of a test device from a keyboard manufacturer. He now has 24 hours to try out new switches and other features.
Well then: the night shift begins.
Gaming table from E-Blue. Gaming. Table.
We have discovered cameras. Stephanie tests all the gimbals and feels like she's in the land of milk and honey.
Here we go! We've read your comments and planned. We are at work.
On the way to the Sony XZ1, we passed the Sony RX0 display. We only had two minutes, but we wanted to show you the thing up close. A detailed test in Zurich after the IFA will be a must.
Thus we sign off for today.
We tested the Sony XZ1 and the 3D scanner built into it.
We tested the Sony XZ1 and the 3D scanner built into it.
Here we go. Dominik and Stephanie set off for Berlin far too early in the morning. In a first look behind the scenes, they show what they have in their luggage.
I check my emails. While we've been sneaking around the trade fair, Blackberry has unveiled the KeyOne in black. Looks great
.
Although the trade fair hasn't even opened yet, we've been granted access to the site. With our cameras at the ready, we hurried through the halls that nobody should have entered yet. So here are a few pictures from our foray.
Since we really only took these snapshots in passing, we don't know any further details. If you're interested in something, let us know in the comments. We can't promise anything, but we'll try to look into it.
The first press event is over. We got an exclusive look at a new Sony smartphone and were allowed to try out the new features.
Shortly, to use the phrase from the MWC in Barcelona again: The night shift begins.
We make our way towards the exhibition centre. At the midday press conference, Sony did not present the eagerly awaited Sony a7 SIII, but the Sony RX0. The manufacturer calls the device a premium compact camera rather than an action cam. The target group is people who have high demands on image quality and do not find this in current action cameras.
The editorial team in Berlin is standing!
We're at the airport. It's early in the morning. If you want to give us a mission to IFA, do it in the comments on this newsfeed. What do you want to see? Which topic are you most interested in? We'll try to cover as many of your wishes as possible and look for the latest unexpected things at the trade fair.
And if you see us at the IFA, say hello. We're always happy to meet our readers in person.
Stephanie met an Irishman at the airport last night at 8pm. He's travelling with a hammock and he's our personal hero.
Although the trade fair in Berlin hasn't even started yet, the first press conferences are taking place
While video producer Stephanie Tresch and editor Dominik Bärlocher are still packing their bags, Samsung presents new wearables in Berlin.
