I bet you don’t clean your earrings enough! Here’s what you should be doing

Earrings and their intricate clasps are difficult to clean. At the same time, they’re particularly susceptible to foul-smelling deposits. Here’s how to clean your earrings properly.

When do you usually clean your jewellery? Probably when it looks dull or has developed a patina. In other words, not very often. Earrings, however, are a different story altogether. Since we don’t just wear them on our skin, but also in it, the stud and clasp in particular attract sebum, dander, sweat, cosmetics and dirt. If you don’t clean your ear jewellery regularly, you risk disgusting deposits along with a bad smell and even infections in the piercing canal. That’s why you should clean earrings that you wear often every week. But how? Studs and clasps have tiny crevices and are particularly difficult to keep clean. Here are three ways to get those hard-to-reach areas sparkling clean – without harming your jewellery.

1. Washing-up liquid

You probably have everything you need for a simple water bath. Put a few squirts of mild washing-up liquid in a bowl of lukewarm water and leave your ear jewellery to soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Afterwards, carefully brush away stubborn dirt with an extra soft toothbrush. Rinse, dry and you’re done. This method is suitable for almost all materials.

2. Special jewellery cleaner

If you want to be on the safe side, you can also buy a special cleaner, such as the jewellery bath by Hagerty, which is available for gold, silver and fashion jewellery. Here’s how it works: place your ear jewellery in the supplied sieve, soak it in the cleaning solution for two minutes and then briefly in warm water. This should leave your jewellery clean and shiny.

3. Ultrasonic cleaner

Ultrasonic cleaners give your earrings are very thorough cleaning. Using high-frequency vibrations, these devices create tiny bubbles that, when they burst, loosen dirt particles from the surface of your earrings. This method is suitable for most types of jewellery as well as glasses, waterproof watches, braces and much more. However, be careful with porous or soft gemstones, pearls and jewellery with glued elements.
