Globi trifft Menschen aus der Schweiz
German, Daniel Mueller, Marc Zollinger, 2024
What is artificial intelligence and digitalisation all about? And who were Bruno Manser and Mani Matter again? Globi explores these and many other questions in two new knowledge books for children.
Is it a human with the features of a parrot? Or is it a parrot in human form? It doesn't matter, Globi is simply Globi. At least that's what my soon-to-be six-year-old daughter told me. What I do know is that Globi is the most successful Swiss children's book character. Since the first book was published in 1935, the blue parrot-man with beret and black and red chequered trousers has been a regular source of entertainment for young and old alike.
The "Globi Knowledge" series proves that this can also be extremely educational. Two new books have now been published in this series: "Globi meets people from Switzerland" and "Globi and the robots".
Globi trifft Menschen aus der Schweiz
German, Daniel Mueller, Marc Zollinger, 2024
In this book, children meet 44 well-known and historical personalities from Switzerland together with Globi. The portraits include the singer-songwriter Mani Matter, the painter Albert Anker and the lost environmental activist Bruno Manser. Globi also gives a stage to people whose names are perhaps no longer so familiar today. Or do you know the name of the inventor of the Velcro fastener off the top of your head? Or the woman behind Betty Bossi? Or the Swiss woman who was the confidante and private secretary of the legendary Sitting Bull? Exactly.
The author of "Globi meets people from Switzerland" is "NZZ am Sonntag" correspondent Marc Zollinger, illustrated by Daniel Müller.
Strictly speaking, this book is not a novelty, but rather a new edition. "Globi and the Robots" was published in 2020 and has now been completely revised, which is due to the rapid progress in the areas of technology and digitalisation. According to Globi Verlag, the facts are now up to date again.
In the book, Globi encounters robots from various fields - such as one that serves coffee. Or those that are used in medicine, for example during operations. Children are also taught about topics such as data protection, ethics, risks and addiction in connection with digitalisation and the use of smartphones and tablets. I will soon be testing how good and understandable this is in practice by looking at and reading the book with our daughter.
Daniel Frick illustrated "Globi and the Robots", which was written by the author of children's non-fiction books and science journalist Atlant Bieri.
"Globi meets people from Switzerland" is the 17th book in the "Globi Knowledge" series. He has already tackled complicated topics such as microbes, the climate and democracy in order to convey them to children in an age-appropriate way.
Globi also likes to wield the wooden spoon, whether it's home-style or exotic. The children's hero of several generations can also be found in the bakery.
Globis indische Küche
German, Marc Zollinger, Walter Pfenninger, Ayesha Nageshwaran, 2023
In addition to all these educational non-fiction books, there are of course still the classic Globi adventures with texts in verse form. Globi recently visited a museum. I wonder what he experienced there? And more importantly: when was the last time you took your child to a museum?
I'm a full-blooded dad and husband, part-time nerd and chicken farmer, cat tamer and animal lover. I would like to know everything and yet I know nothing. I know even less, but I learn something new every day. What I am good at is dealing with words, spoken and written. And I get to prove that here.
