It’s my favourite time of the year – the sun is shining, the water is glistening and the ice cubes are clinking. «But it’s so hot at night. The insects are annoying. And you’re constantly sweating,» you might argue. Yeah, yeah, legitimate problems – for which, as someone who loves the sun, I naturally have solutions.
A moment for muslin
As much as I love my cosy comforter – we’re taking a break from it during these months. It’s moved into the under-bed storage compartment, and I’m sharing the mattress with my fair-weather replacement: Simona. Simona’s made of pleasantly soft cotton muslin, has just enough weight to give me that cosy snuggled-up feeling, but doesn’t make me sweat. When it gets cooler outside again – and it’s time for the duvet to make a comeback – Simona returns to her true role as a simple, beautiful bedspread.
A frappé just like on holiday
Last September, I fell in love with Greece. Aside from the people, beaches, and food, it was the «Signature Drink of the Greek Summer» that really stole my heart: dangerously sweet and outrageously creamy iced coffee.
It’s more of a dessert than a drink – and every serious coffee drinker’s nightmare. Fortunately, I don’t relate to the latter. So, once I got home, I ordered the Arendo beverage mixer and a jar of instant coffee. Ever since then, it’s been Greek summer at my place (almost) every day – and I love it.
A shield for your tomatoes and the like
Wasps and fruit flies are as much a part of summer as strawberries and ice cream. But, I don’t want to stick everything from bananas to tomatoes in the fridge, nor do I want to be constantly swatting at those pesky insects outside. Instead, I use Estivo – an unassuming stainless-steel mesh cover that, with its 35-centimeter diameter, fits over any plate or larger fruit bowl. While the cover won’t protect you from insects, it will at least keep your fruits and vegetables from being overtaken.
Cooling and protection in one
No matter where I go these days, I always take this 19-centimetre spray bottle from Schwarzkopf Professional with me. It’s actually meant for use in hair salons, but with its ultra-fine, continuous mist of water, it provides welcome relief from the heat in any sweaty everyday situation. It’s compact, easy to fill and holds 150 millilitres. By the way, the wet mist also works wonders against those pesky wasps I mentioned earlier – they can’t stand it. Just one spray and they take off as fast as they can.
Smart solutions
The last recommendation has absolutely nothing to do with summer. But if you haven’t had any luck finding new chairs or need space-saving seating for guests, Cocon’s stools are your perfect Galaxus find. They were meant to be a temporary solution because searching for the «right chairs» was proving to be more difficult than expected. Since then, I’ve almost come to accept them as permanent pieces. Of course, the fact that they’re modelled after Alvar Aalto’s iconic Stool 60 for Artek (but cost only a fraction of the price) certainly doesn’t hurt.
