Fika in Stockholm

Stockholm: My great love in the north. Fika: The Swedes' coffee break. These are my recommendations.

Fika

Fika means taking a break in a café alone or with friends. You drink a coffee and eat a cinnamon bun. Of course you can also drink something else (for example a hot chocolate with marshmallows), another sweet (cake, mmmhhhh) or eat nothing at all. Fika is all about the break ritual itself, which is firmly anchored in Swedish culture. In the six-part video series "Fika: To Have Coffee", the phenomenon is beautifully demonstrated.

My recommendations

There are countless cafés in Stockholm. Each one more special, cosier and hipper than the last. These are my five favourites at the moment.

Café String

At first glance, you might think that this café is where flea remains are temporarily stored. But once you sit inside, you can hardly get enough of all the decorative elements and furniture. Everywhere you can fit a chair, there's one. There are even tables on the wide windowsill. And they are absolutely necessary. At the weekend for the brunch buffet, every seat is taken. It's worth arriving early, because the buffet is varied, delicious and reasonably priced.

Fabrique

Fabrique is a wood-fired bakery with several stores in Stockholm. In some (e.g. at Roselundsgatan 28 in Södermalm) there are a few chairs and tables so you can enjoy the treats on the spot. Fine bread, sandwiches and cinnamon buns are just some of the items on sale. The bakeries are all furnished in an industrial style, but still convey a cosy flair. The Swedes simply have interior design under control.

Wayne's Coffee

The Swedish coffee house chain serves the best hot chocolate with marshmallows. I recommend you take a window seat in the store at Götgatan 31 and spend an afternoon people-watching. That's how you experience Stockholm.

Gilda's Rum

The Gildas Rum café is also uniquely decorated: Shades of red and gold, heavy, cosy armchairs, old lamps and picture frames with photos of people who could be your great-great-grandparents. The café is a wonderful retreat that radiates cosy warmth on cold days. Thanks to the neighbouring park, it offers lovely outdoor seating in summer.

Kaffeverket

The café, furnished in an industrial style, is not only ideal for fika, but also offers a varied breakfast menu with fine juices. The coffee is a barista's dream and the crepes with homemade jam are simply delicious.

I will be flying to Stockholm again in May. I'm already looking forward to visiting new and familiar cafés. Do you have a recommendation for me?

Fika for at home

An armchair like in Café String, good coffee and something sweet to go with it - and I'm already in Stockholm in my thoughts.

I love the strategy game “The Settlers of Catan”, the Ravensburger puzzle “Colourful Cupcakes” and the pink fluffy unicorn that sits on my desk (a birthday present from my workmates). Not only do I have a weakness for toys, I also get excited about good food and comedy TV shows.
