FAQs on IPL hair removal: here are our answers

Thinking of trying IPL treatment, but not sure you're making the right choice? We've collected and answered the most frequently asked questions to help you decide.
What is IPL, and how does this method work?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a method that uses gentle pulses of light to remove hair naturally and permanently. The success of the treatment depends on a precise determination of the skin type.
During IPL hair removal, the light pulses are absorbed by a pigment in the hair called melanin and transformed into light energy. This heat is then transmitted to the hair root and activates the resting phase of the hair follicle. Hair falls out naturally and regrowth is slowed down. As a result, your skin stays soft and clear for longer. As white and blond hair have no melanin, IPL technology only works on dark hair or hair with dark roots.
How do IPL device models differ?
The various IPL epilators differ initially in terms of their application. Some models can only be used on the body and others can also be used on the face. Secondly, they differ in terms of the number of light pulses, intensity levels and treatment surface. Other possible functions include changing the cartridge or diagnosing the skin type. However, more recent devices no longer offer replacement cartridges, as the built-in light pulses are sufficient for several years.
What exactly does the number of light pulses correspond to?
The light pulses are gently projected onto the skin, then absorbed by melanin and delivered to the hair follicles. In general, the higher the number of light pulses, the longer the lifespan of the device. In fact, 100,000 light pulses last several years. An IPL treatment every four weeks (around 12 times a year) on all areas (underarms, legs, bikini line and intimate areas) requires around 8,000 light pulses a year. That's 40,000 light pulses over five years. So the device is more likely to break than to wear out. If you want to be sure of its longevity, opt for a model with more than 150,000 light pulses.
Why can't I use an IPL device on blonde hair?
As we've already mentioned, the light pulses are absorbed by melanin. This determines the colour of our hair and body hair. The darker they are, the richer in melanin they are. Black hair contains a lot of melanin, light brown hair contains a little and blond hair has none. Without melanin, the light pulses can't heat the hair follicles, and IPL doesn't work. Unfortunately, this technology doesn't work on black skin either, as the skin is also heated, which can cause burns.
What's the difference between corded and cordless devices?
This is just one practical aspect: cordless devices can be used anywhere. For example, you can treat your legs (approx. 20 minutes per limb) while watching your favourite TV programme.
The flash of light dazzles me, do I need to wear protective glasses?
It is essential to follow the instructions that apply to your device. Most of them require no protection, as they have a system that prevents the release of light pulses when the tip is not completely in contact with the skin. If the flashes are still too intense, we advise you to carry out your treatment in a clear room.
Can I use IPL if I'm depilated or waxed?
Yes, because epilators or waxing don't remove all the hair roots either. The treatment may take a little longer, but the end result is the same.
Can I use IPL on my face?
Yes, if your device has been designed to be used on this area. Some devices come with accessories designed for the face. Always avoid the areas above the cheekbones and do not use IPL on the eyebrows.
How long does my skin remain hairless?
The treated area generally remains hairless for 6 to 8 weeks. In some areas, hair can take several months to grow back, depending on the type of hair and how it grows. In principle, they all reappear eventually if the home treatment is interrupted. This is because it is not a permanent hair removal method.
What can I do if the IPL treatment doesn't work?
First of all, check that you have been having regular treatments every fortnight, that you have followed the instructions and how long you have been using your device. Results take a little time to appear. If you're not satisfied after 4 or 5 treatments or if they don't suit you, you can make use of the device's guarantee and get your money back, provided the manufacturer offers one.
Can I use IPL if I have a tattoo?
A tattoo is comparable to dark skin: the device regards it as an area with a high concentration of melanin and heats it, which can cause burns. Above all, don't treat any tattooed area, but you don't have to forgo treatment altogether. Simply contour it.
My hair is blonde, but my body hair is brown. Can I use IPL?
Yes, you can use the device, as your hair contains melanin.
Is IPL suitable for intimate parts?
Darker areas can be treated at a lower intensity. The device should not be used on mucous membranes (labia minora, vagina and anus).
When should IPL be avoided?
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions. As a general rule, avoid any treatment:
- If your skin is very dark or black .- If your hair is blonde, grey or red
- On a large birthmark or large area covered with freckles, a tattoo, large veins or scars (go around them)
- On the nipples
- During pregnancy and breastfeeding (no studies are available on this subject)
- If you are under 16 years of age
- If you have been exposed to the sun in the last 24 hours
- If you have any disorder or disease: skin lesions, haematomas, skin cancer, vascular diseases (such as varicose veins), diabetes, immune deficiencies or allergies to light; if you are taking anticoagulants, immunosuppressants or painkillers that make the skin less sensitive. Consult your doctor if you are taking medication that increases your sensitivity to light before using a pulsed light hair removal method.
Can my husband use the same IPL device?
Yes, IPL devices can in principle be used by men, but not on facial hair.
Are facial tips suitable for beards?
No, because beard hair is coarser than body hair.
Is IPL treatment painful?
It should be neither unpleasant nor painful. You may experience a warm sensation, tingling or mild itching, but these symptoms should disappear 30 minutes after treatment. Start with a lower intensity or test on a small area before moving on to larger areas.
How many treatments do I have to do before I see the first results?
Initially, treatment should take place every fortnight for eight weeks (equivalent to 4 or 5 treatments). Normally, there is a reduction in the number of hairs after the first two treatments. After 4 to 5 treatments, 80% of the hair should have been removed.
How long does an IPL treatment last?
It depends on the area involved:
- Armpits: approx. 2 to 3 minutes for both sides
- Bikini: 1 to 2 minutes per side/approx. 5 minutes for entire area
- Face: approx. 2 minutes (upper lips, chin, sideburns)
- One calf: approx. 10 minutes
- A whole leg: en. 15 to 20 minutes
Can side effects occur?
Here is what Philips, the main manufacturer of IPL devices, says:
No serious adverse effects are expected to occur if the device is used in accordance with the instructions in the user manual. Redness and sensations of heat may occur. These slight skin reactions are completely normal.
Redness:
The appearance of slight to moderate redness as soon as the treatment is completed is normal and benign. They disappear rapidly.
Heat sensation:
You may experience heat, itching and tingling during treatment. These are normal phenomena that cease as soon as treatment is stopped.
Rare side effects:
Incorrect use of the device (too high an intensity, for example) may cause skin reactions such as burns or pigmentation changes. Reduce the intensity as soon as the treatment becomes unpleasant to avoid irritation. If the symptoms do not disappear after three days, consult a doctor. Wait until the skin has completely healed before resuming treatment, and always reduce the intensity of the light pulses. Changes in pigmentation are very rare. They are characterised by light or dark spots on the affected areas and occur if you use a light intensity that is too high for your skin. If the spots do not disappear within two weeks of treatment, consult a doctor. Only treat these areas when the skin has returned to its normal colour.
In rare cases, skin infections and inflammation may occur. Using the IPL device on wounds, razor cuts, previous injuries and ingrown hairs may cause this.
In the following cases, you may experience unusually intense pain during or after treatment:
- If you are treating unshaven skin .- If you use a light intensity that is too high for your skin colour
- If you repeat the treatment on the same area
- If you use the device on open wounds, inflammation, tattoos or burns
Important:
Carefully read the user manual supplied by the manufacturer and follow its instructions. This will help you avoid problems.
