Replacement for my ancient Casio: these 5 models are on the shortlist

Day after day, through thick and thin. My old Casio watch has been through quite a lot - and you can see that in the meantime. One of these five models will soon be its successor.

Watches today are supposed to be as smart as mobiles. Receive your emails, measure your heart rate, tell you when to go to bed. But I only really want one thing from my watch: precise time information.

That's why I've been looking at the same Casio "A168WA-1" for over twelve years. It shows me the time and date. If I'm feeling really adventurous, I use its stopwatch function, the alarm or switch the blue dial light on and off. That's all it has to offer, and that's all I ask for. Our stable relationship of more than a decade has left its mark: The chrome-plated panelling on the case of the "A168WA-1" is now peeling off inexorably.

So now something smart with an infinite number of functions and sensitivities? Nope, I'm staying true to the minimalist Japanese classics. Only the model might vary for a change. To decide on one, I tried on five. My favourite?

Place 5: The Casio "LTP-V007D-1B"

The analogue watch with the Roman numerals is delicate and at first glance doesn't look at all like the classic Casio look. That's exactly why I ordered it - but now I just can't warm to it. Too elegant, I miss the retro vibe. And the date display. I obviously want it to be that smart after all.

Simple and elegant, but not really in the Casio look.

Place 4: The Casio "MTP-1302D-7A2"

I like the second analogue model better. I like the subtle mix of silver and gold, which goes well with all pieces of jewellery. The watch with the easily adjustable stainless steel bracelet also tells me the date. But I still miss that certain Casio something.

Place 3: The Casio "A168WEM-1EF"

Because I love my old digital watch so much, I naturally had to take a closer look at another version of the "A168". As usual, I can read the day and date and use the alarm, stop or light function if required. In contrast to my current watch, the small dial is completely dark and therefore looks a little more grown-up. I knew I would like this model. But a change was actually needed.

Place 2: The Casio "MTP-M305M-1AVER"

I basically love everything about this Casio: the mesh bracelet, the cute moon phase display and the fact that it has two small extra dials that show me the day of the week and date. Why does it still only come in second place? With its "44.5 × 34 × 9.3" millimetre case, it's a little too bulky on my wrist.

Great watch - just a little too big for me.

Place 1: The Casio "AQ-800E-3AEF"

For me, the "AQ-800E-3AEF" combines the best of both worlds. I like the simple design in an 80s look just as much as the division into an analogue and a digital dial. It has the Casio look without being too similar to my "A168WA-1" and exactly the few "smart" functions I want. I think we can do business.
